Pros and cons of decentralization + current state of fedi as a microblogging dominant thing.

We're on a fragmentiverse,where community waters down, what you send today is lost in history tomorrow. There is no search, no archive.

We are on a good path but the kind of organization we need to mature social web open standards and enabling technologies is not well supported on fedi.

Barrier to sign up to a single forum removed, easier access, but dispersal of the community efforts.

To get things on a forum archive in the right place, I'd have to mention that place in my mastodon toot. And then the next place too, unless they happen to be cross-federated with the other one.

One thing we discussed in the path was Unbound Groups brought in a FEP by Diogo of GNU Social, whereby the groups aren't bound to a single server instance where they are defined as an actor. This might help give the same community belonging that is more stimulating for collaborative actions.

And a deeper discussion is that there really is no "the fedi", or they shouldn't be that notion for our future of social networking. Unless you want to refer to some broad category. I see 'fediverse' the same as internet and web, category names.

What do we want to DO on this fedi of ours? What needs do we have wrt communications online?

Microblogging certainly nice, I am doing it right now. But is shouldn't be the only hammer and everything nails. Enfin, you know the discussion :)

Yes, possible. But I didn't mean a true takeover, just de facto. Think a dev portal like React or GraphQL with a relatively large paid team of employees that effectively the new course and direction.

Right now none of that is needed, as fedi doesn't pose a real threat. They may spin something up to counteract Bluesky uptake though. Just speculating.

@BeAware or more EEE, time will tell. I see Threads as strategic investment that places Meta in a strong position to counteract any threats to their empire. And otherwise as a way to deal with - in their eyes - pesky EU regulations of DMA/DSA.

Until now they threw peanuts $$ to Threads. And it was a huge success implementation-wise (built on top of the complex Instagram existing stack in no time).

If Meta feels ActivityPub protocol evolution is stuck, they may launch a dev portal. Take charge.

Weird. You edited the toot and changed 'index' to 'feed' in the fedi handle to 404 media.

So I received a mastodon 'edited a post' notification that in the display text reflects that. However when I hover over that with my mouse it still points to the 'index' handle, and same when replying.

'Open original page' shows everything as I'd expected it to be.

In 2019 Tristan Harris, ex-Google Ethics and known from "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix, said to me - after having spent a year for The Center of Humane Technology strategizing with well-informed Silicon Valley insiders and even world leaders - that the Center's primary concern was "to avoid the complete unraveling of the fabric of society and wars".

@alterelefant yes, the marketing is brilliant. Couple of Hollywood famous actor promoters, nifty colorful tiny cups that decouple our thinking of how little coffee is in it, and promoting lazy consumer habits. Have cheap machines initially, then make them pricier (a la printers and ink cartridges).

At least the coffee is reasonably drinkable. We also have Nescafe pads for making undrinkable bile, to fake the lifestyle. 😁

#FOSS is the great accomplice of #BigTech dominance, by not considering its impact on society and by generally not being produced sustainably. FOSS does not defend its market position, dumping itself on the market and leaving the rest to chance. The vultures know how to make good use of this. FOSS does not worry whether its customer segment - the #Commons - is reached, and evil players are kept out.

Big tech manages to win through ‘free’ in their delivery model, where FOSS sees itself losing.

I think one thing that held further adoption of @peertube back is that almost every fedizen when passing along a vid in a toot, uses the copied/pasted vid URL inline in toot text.

Almost no one take the 2sec. to look up the URL in their Mastodon or other microblogging client, and *directly* interacts on the video, by liking and adding interesting discussion threads below these videos (and imagine all the cool cross-refs to recommneded other vids that could be made here).

Other than that.. I started calling current AS/AP fedi the "as soon as possible" fediverse, where necessarily early app implementations served as the de-facto reference implementations for the #W3C #ActivityStreams and #ActivityPub open standards.

At serious cost: Ever increasing #ProtocolDecay and subsequent #WhackaMoleAdoption i.e. retaining app-by-app interop pipes against moving release targets.

When is Video domain getting standardized? That's my question.
