Anybody have tips for #Unionizing a workplace? This might just be the year. I just am a bit overwhelmed by the thought of being an organizer, it does kind of put a target on your back & can be pretty sus with unionbusting & stuff. I have no idea how to even start! I've already talked to a few of my co-workers & it seems like some are either interested or indifferent, none who seem hostile.
@vadhakara@dangillmor i believe this is one of the many reasons why who is in charge of the FCC matters so much, & why the supreme Court overturning the Chevron precedent is so scary, bc protections for Internet use have depended largely on whether they are considered a telecommunications technology or not. Which has varied depending on who was having the FCC, but could be settled forever in one direction or another soon if a court finds it relevant to clarify ambiguous legislature about it. 😬
@wiredfire@LillyHerself@xs4me2 considering that before the AI boom, we were collectively only managing to power about 6% of the total energy use with renewables on a regular basis, there is ZERO REASON to think it's different with AI because "they pwomise." Everyone is absolutely right to dunk on the power consumption, just like with shitcoin, in fact they don't dunk nearly hard enough.
Just trying to search (using DuckDuckGo, because I already know Google's fuckin useless) whether its advisable to put a small bandaid on a coldsore, particularly with medication on it, particularly overnight or out and about.
EVERYTHING IS JUST ABOUT PRODUCTS.
No simple resources for information. No simple facts. "What's the best hydrocollood bandage for coldsores?" "Coldsore bandage walgreens." "coldsore bandage near me." Best MAKEUP for hiding coldsores.
I hate that huge, expensive, energy intensive swaths of fanatically advanced technology is working away, heating the planet, sucking up money & resources, not primarily to power cutting-edge medicine, augment educational environments, or make the world more accessible & equitable.
A lot of it is now just expensive garbage, more dead technology like fucking landlines and broadcast television that were #enshittified to death by greedy companies, advertisers, & scammers.
I'm doing it, btw. I'm gonna put a bandaid on a coldsore I just medicated.
As far as my mostly informed layperson's knowledge can say, there are probably some benefits to covering a cold sore at least for certain times and activities & few significant risks. For me, I don't want to fuck up my sore with my pillow, blankets etc while I sleep & risk spreading the outbreak, causing more pain, or slowing healing. 🤷
I'm mildly allergic to some bandage adhesives & maybe that'll make it worse, idk.
There's no reasonable escape. No mainstream search engine uses regex anymore. You can't even -minus out or "quote in" terms with reasonable accuracy. Half of the results are AI trash to sell you products, maybe a lucky 1-in-10 is simply there to inform you. More like 1-in-50 most times. It was once noted as a landmark that Google users rarely navigated to page 2 of search results, because they found what they wanted on page 1.
Now I'm regularly diving 3, 4, 5, sometimes more pages deep.
@nullagent@originlbookgirl if Dems can't produce meaningful positive changes for people when they DO have optimal conditions, then what the fuck is anyone supposed to really behind? This is the time of reckoning the left has warned about for decades, where "at least we're not Republicans" is no longer good enough to carry the party thru an election even with an incumbent president & actual gas chambers fascism knocking at the door.
@nullagent@originlbookgirl yes, exactly. I have lived in "commiefornia" my whole life. Almost always a Dem governor, Dem senators, majority Dem Reps, etc. yet shit still sucks a lot of the time. The fact is we have 2 conservative parties in the US, one moderate & one extreme, with ZERO LEFT LEANING of any major influence. You get the occasional lefty Rep or something in the Dem party but that's about it. Maybe an Independent who caucuses with the Dems.
@spencerbeswick i love that research has now completely confirmed this & people still choose to believe that humans need jobs & will simply do nothing at all unless literally extorted under threat of starvation, illness, & total expulsion from society. 🙃
@MisterMoo@aral@RosePuckey there are ZERO REASONS to give any tech company the benefit of the doubt in the current climate. Every sus move a FOSS org makes that looks like the same enshittification we've seen over the last 20 years has a crowd of breathless goobers saying "what makes you so SURE?? Nothing's happened YET!! It could be different, YOU'RE ruining everything with your CYNICISM!!"
How fucking gullible can you be? How many times do they have to do this before people get it?
@MisterMoo@aral@RosePuckey christ have people never heard of things like "pattern recognition," "history repeating itself," or just the completely reasonable act of "making predictions based on real-world events"???
The overall trend with the FOSS world lately has fucking sucked. Org after org is gradually falling into the same predatory, money-grubbing, privacy-invading, user-exploiting bullshit the big companies do. Supposedly "for survival." People are rational to be sick of it.
@astraleureka I'm sorry, I thought the entire point of "open source" was that it's vastly easier to audit than closed source/most proprietary software. Isn't the discovery of this backdoor a good thing, because it means the open source model is working? (To catch threats and weaknesses in a collaboratively developed system?)
Maybe I'm underinformed, but if it took a long time to be discovered then maybe FOSS community needs to be more aggressive & thorough with auditing FOSS software. 🤷
@xogium@x0@baschdel@jookia does this extrapolate to the idea that a person who already exclusively uses Linux as a sighted person and loses their sight will basically have to switch to Windows just to learn how to basically navigate a computer as a blind person? It's so wild how no one thinks about accessibility when anyone can become deaf/blind/disabled at any point in their life even if they used to be abled.
@xogium that's really depressing. It's crazy too because I had never really seen clear outlines and demands to make software accessible before reading through documentation for FOSS projects/guidelines for FOSS developers. It seems like the FOSS/libre community DISCUSSES accessibility all the time, but somehow nobody's actually doing it. :(
