Crazy Fata Morgana effect today. The mountains don't actually look like buttes; the air temperature difference results in different densities that create a lensing effect.

@lzg you gotta embrace the principle of continuous motion - just keep grabbing stuff, no matter how inefficiently

@futurebird @dalias most of the time applying ML to physical models will produce an over-linearized black-box solution compared to using known equations to solve, simulate, and optimize whatever you’re trying to do. In situations where simulation is resource intensive to do at full fidelity we have tools like domain-specific reduced -order models.

@mattly Mail is integrated into the browser but maybe you could change how it opens links. @jon or @Vivaldi would be able to answer that, or field a feature request.

@thomasfuchs Nice. Presumably that higher-quality display is also easier on the eyes for long sessions?

@thomasfuchs Hm, maybe my work M1 is RAM-limited (or disk i/o)? I’ve tried Lightroom Classic on it and it definitely slows down if I’m editing more than a hundred images. Snappier than the 2017 Intel one I normally use though.
Is the Pro screen different than the Air one?

I’m considering getting one of the new Macbooks now that I’m going to without a work laptop. The Air is tempting but I guess the Pro with the M3 Pro chip is probably the better bet for photo editing and running builds / programming.

@thomasfuchs I mean… it’s a mean to an end not the end itself right?

I think one reason “internet news" feels so everywhelming is that the design patterns are not high-density and there is no real concept of a 1-paragraph article like you would see in a newspaper or news magazine.

Instead everything is a "feed" designed to make you click a link to a “page" which has a fresh supply of ads for you to look at.

@thomasfuchs Ha, no. You might take economics as an elective but rarely “home economics” or anything related to financial literacy.

@thomasfuchs The misconception that people have is that there is some way to get more money back via deductions than whatever you spent it on. I guess because people know that corporations are smart about tracking deductible spending so they think it is somehow net profitable.
