Around a decade ago when I was doing work in the 'emerging markets' of SE Asia (Indonesia, Myanmar) etc there was a common saying that 'the Internet there is FB / Google / Whatsapp' and that the 'next billion users' were out there, somewhere, to be future users of those properties.
The open web was curiously missing.
Turns out, the big cos were just using other countries as a model

However, due to inequalities in it's also hard to imagine how people in the rest of the world could stand up their own infra.
If servers cost US$5 a month at least, that's a huge huge chunk of money over there not to mention the fuckery of how to pay for it (if people have credit cards at all, they are very often flagged for fraud in international transactions)

@ak yeah and the only country that had enough civil society and activism to push back was really india

@skinnylatte yep... many telcos in emerging markets cut deals that made major sites like Facebook free to access
