I believe the OP, and I'm saddened about it. However, it is not my experience with being part of a small geographical instance, #HoosierSocial - an Indiana instance for Indiana folks.
Is our instance is extraordinary? We have a strong policy in place to reduce the bad stuff. Because we are regional, we also do things together that other social media doesn't, like fun events and meetups. It's special, and worth supporting.
Perhaps the future is fun local geographic servers?
Right now we've got Patreon and other donation platforms. I give a little to their Patreon every month because it's important. I give to my local instances that accept donations.
Other methods of funding that don't have chains: Possibly there are grants for the public digital good? Maybe we can have a funding event or telethon?
I will suppose in a few months Bsky's VC money will run out. How will they fund the servers then? Sell user info? Ask for donations? Show ads? Sell the whole platform to Google?
The possibilities are endless, but all options are bad for the users. It will drive some more users here.
🚶 Started my day with a 3.87 mile walk / 8300 steps! #walking 🤧 Recovered from my severe head cold last week. Feeling much better! 🎓 Finished my first research paper last night for new #GradSchool class, in a subject that is useful to me. Computer networks. About 60-some weeks of grad school left.
I don't hate #bsky, but they are in Stage 1 of #enshittification. They just got loads of venture capital & they are spending it like crazy to attract enough people for stage 2.
The VCs will always, always demand their money back. So, once they get people established on the platform, they will be monetized and milked for profit. Eventually, there will be Nazis and ads there.
We will be ad-free, and continue to banish our Nazis to purgatory away from polite discourse.
👆 More evidence to support my theory that @dansup is actually a team of twelve people. No human can actually produce all this quality content so quickly. 🤓
I've been experimenting with this and don't think it's possible to put a filter against certain keywords and then follow them in a list. (Does filtering come before listing? I think so.)
That being said, the column feature has some pretty good precision where you can possibly include and remove certain hashtags, possibly getting the precision that mimics what you need. Hope this helps.
It's kinda fun to see how #PixelFed and #Mastodon treat the same data. The PixelFed feed has 10 images. The Mastodon feed says "Whoah, bro. Like isn't 4 enough?"
I'm just checking on what has been done already at #Pixelfed and I'm thoroughly impressed. The web interface is already must better than the #Instagram interface. (Last I checked, there is none in Insta)
I love how you can search a Mastodon hashtag within Pixelfed, and it will digest all of the images of the Fediverse with that hashtag and make it beautiful.
That being said, the Android app is still in Beta, and I was not able to get logged in using that. But I'm really looking forward to it!
