    This about the #Fosstodon drama, by @kev, deeply saddens me. Don't know what to do about it, but I do think one thing:

    The supermajority of us that want the fedi to be a welcoming place need to intentionally work to be as heard as the fringe minority.

    "The fedi is supposed to be a friendly, welcoming online space, right? But the fact is, it isn't. It's just like everywhere else online - the vocal minority are just as loud, and just as obnoxious as everywhere else."

      Lots of people have been asking myself and Mike for a statement on the recent drama surrounding Fosstodon. This is **MY** statement.

      @dandean I'm far removed from this issue. But would seem that the issue isn't the outcome, as the moderator in question has left -- but the means by which it got to that point.

      @anderseknert - Don't want to speak to issues I don't know well.

      But my call was about even when speaking difficult truths are needed - that those who want the fedi to be a welcoming place, to be able to speak such truths clearly - but with some grace and humility. And to model what that looks like as "loudly" as the small fringe of voices who specifically are unwelcoming and unkind in their speech.

      Right, but the reason they got called out was one of their moderators clearly not supporting that idea, wasn’t it?

      @ScottStarkey @kev Same: not at all my experience on Indieweb.social, either. As a former admin or now as a happy member of the server.

      @tchambers @kev

      I believe the OP, and I'm saddened about it. However, it is not my experience with being part of a small geographical instance, #HoosierSocial - an Indiana instance for Indiana folks.

      Is our instance is extraordinary? We have a strong policy in place to reduce the bad stuff. Because we are regional, we also do things together that other social media doesn't, like fun events and meetups. It's special, and worth supporting.

      Perhaps the future is fun local geographic servers?

      @mjr

      For the above: I was trying to make a bigger point on fedivese culture writ large. It is a super-majority here that does value kindness even in speaking hard things (especially so) and it is the minority frienge that is loud beyond their numbers, that does not.
      So if we want a more kind, welcoming fedi, it's on those of us who value that to be as vocal here. That does NOT mean avoiding difficult convos or conflict, but being kind and humble AS we engage.

      @tchambers it's not at all clear to me who thinks who is "the supermajority", "the fringe minority" and "the vocal minority" there. Do you feel it was a problem to appoint that moderator, point out the problem, stand by the mod, or something else?
