In this AMA post, @nigel asks me about the about the federated web and whether I think there's a future for it. It's an interesting question as I'm heavily involved in the federated web by running this blog, as well as Fosstodon and 500.Social. https://kevquirk.com/blog/ama-do-i-see-a-future-for-the-federated-web
Two and a half years ago, almost to the day, I bought my Sony WF-1000XM4 ear buds, but now they won't hold a charge, so I'm on the hunt for new ones. https://kevquirk.com/blog/my-sony-earbuds-are-dead
To “fix the internet” we don’t need more ads, we need you guys to come up with more diverse revenue streams. Like, I dunno, making great products and charging for them? 🤯
When I was in the USA recently, I’d get laughs every time I pulled my phone out (not very often as I hardly use it). It’s an #iPhone 13 Mini and everyone commented on how they’ve never seen one, how cute it is, and would ask how I use something so small.
Are smaller phones really that rare in the States? 🤷♂️
@louis@cory I don’t believe any of these claims are accurate. They’ve never stated (to my knowledge) that they snooping on search queries. They’re also not “becoming an ad company” or “owned by an ad company”.
Are Mozilla perfect? God no. Are these statements true? Also no. Let’s not spread FUD, there’s enough of that out there already.
Who knows, maybe this is a way for them to become more sustainable away from the Google $. I’d welcome that if the ads respect users.
Whomp whomp. Managing a newsletter is really difficult, I don’t envy @buttondown. Having said that, I’m sure many folk would describe my posts as spam. 😂
@Brendanjones limit basically means an account can only interact those that already follow it.
So if I limit userA, and userB already follows A, then B will still see A's posts. But userC won't know A exists as they didn't follow them when they were limited.
Lots of people throwing #Substack alternatives out there, but I haven’t seen much love for #Buttondown. No idea why, because it’s awesome.
With Buttondown you get:
✅ Fully hosted ✅ Newsletter, RSS and public archive (a blog) ✅ Custom CSS for both newsletter and web ✅ Run by a really cool person who’s always adding new features ✅ That warm fuzzy feeling of supporting indie devs
