When I was a kid there was this cake shop near us (in Tokyo) that made madeleines with marmalade.

Their madeleines did not come in the shell shape; they came in a shallow cup-cake like tin foil, with a thick layer of light orange marmalade at the bottom.

Imagine the delight of a child eating that buttery cake and then using her finger(!!) to scrape the gooey marmalade base?! I don't even know how adults ate that marmalade-madeleine with politeness and dignity. #madeleine #marmalade

It may be considered weird but I like it anyway—snacking on cheddar cheese and vintage Oxford extra coarse cut marmalade. I love everything about this marmalade!!!

I just had a slice of apple buttermilk cake I baked last month (these things can be frozen & thawed overnight)...it was soooo heavenly!!!

I used this recipe but improved (in my view) by increasing the amount of apples (from 2 to 3) and (I think) butter too (from 1/2 to 1 stick).

Whatever I did, the result was feather-light, fruity and fluffy!! I must do this again. I like using McIntosh for baking. I love that melt-in-the-mouth feel & flavor.

Reading a book written by our family friend Christina von Ditfurth about her paternal grandmother. Christina’s life itself is amazing but oh my, I was not prepared for this.
Luisella at first is not a sympathetic figure, except that she had to grow up in a loveless household. Amazing to trace her life, in part bound by social norms and geopolitical forces, yet she stubbornly keeps her autonomy & lives her life, a life of her own.

It imposes on the freedom to think and therefore to act free of fear, threats, and distrust.
It imposes on one’s ability to think and act like a fully free citizen for a long time.
Hate speech can also change the brains of those with mild prejudice, moving it towards hate and threatening action. When hate is physically in your brain, then you think hate and feel hate, you are moved to act to carry out what you physically, in your neural system, think and feel.

All thought is carried out by neural circuitry — it does not float in air. Language neurally activates thought. Language can thus change brains, both for the better and the worse.

Hate speech changes the brains of those hated for the worse. It creates toxic stress, fear and distrust — all physical, all in one’s neural circuitry active every day.

This internal harm can be even more severe than an attack with a fist.

I have a black daughter like him, so it was very interesting and I had a lot to think about.
My daughter went to a local school in Japan a few times, 2-3 weeks at a time in summer, and was very popular. Her experience looks quite the opposite to the boy's, but is actually similar. She was popular as an outsider. She wasn't fully accepted as one of them, but more like a special guest from America.

Went to the Boston Japan Film Festival today. There were two films about black people living in Japan, one was a collection of black adults living in Japan and the other was about a black Japanese kid who was bullied in new school.

I love #metalsmith process!!! Here I was heating up one half of my heart locket to fix some botched drilling (don't ask me...) and the silver heart is embracing the heat and running scarlet.

I love how different metals transform in a split second.

There are five cases being fought in multiple courts. Earlier, a district court in Hokkaido also held that the lack of #SameSexMarriage law violated #Japan’s Constitution, whereas a district court in Osaka held otherwise.

Curious how other two courts will rule. But let’s also not forget that popular values can form the society’s prevalent norms/principles, which could become “soft law,” which in turn could become “hard law.” Ppl make laws. Not vice versa
