Went to the Boston Japan Film Festival today. There were two films about black people living in Japan, one was a collection of black adults living in Japan and the other was about a black Japanese kid who was bullied in new school.

My daughter went to a local school in Japan a few times, 2-3 weeks at a time in summer, and was very popular. Her experience looks quite the opposite to the boy's, but is actually similar. She was popular as an outsider. She wasn't fully accepted as one of them, but more like a special guest from America.Shiina repeated this. -

Junko H (junjunh@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 04-Dec-2022 12:36:23 JST Junko H I also thought about my husband's experience as a black guy living in Japan. He was often questioned by a police officer and I was often picked in a security line at the airport when travelling with him.
And, of course, I thought about myself being an Asian immigrant in the States... There's so many elements in this.
