@micr0 @nelson but that is not the effect. People don´t start writing their own alt text more, they start relying on AltBot more. So it is a replacement, sadly, because I recognize the good intentions behind it.

I hope it is clear I don't do ocular seeing. Meaning is content too.

"The black and white image appears to show two young women in a rural setting., dressed in polka dot dresses. The scene seems serene and calm...." etc ad nauseam. And then the image appears in someone's post and it turns out they're his lesbian great aunts or some such.

In that case: : "my Lesbian great aunts in a black and white photo from the 1960, wearing identical polka dot dresses"

At least does the notion of reciprocity and valuable human exchange hold water? Seeing and blind people have little interaction such as it is. AltBot creates an image around blind people that I consider to be detrimental in the long run.

@nelson I am blind. Seeing people who think I'm not worth the effort fill my timeline with AltBot generated AI stuff that isn't even accurate in lots of cases.

Human alt text is always better, because it doesn´t focus on ocular seeing. Seeing people think, and AltBot was designed around that notion, that blind people must compensate for missing "eye-seeing", but that's not the case. I am interested in the meaning of an image to you, its maker or publisher.

Again, human alt text is better, also because it strengthens reciprocity between seeing and blind people. AltBot doesn't but it makes seeing people believe they have done their bit for accessibility. In actuality, the reverse is often true.

@altbot I am #blind and I am stating here that no, @Altbot is not making the fediverse ¨more inclusive¨. Instead it enables the Sighties to be performative about being an #Ally by their use of an AI tool that fails to describe images reliably. Sighties who choose to spare themselves the trouble of adding #AltText to their images and who offer fake "access by AI" get blocked.

World, we Dutch people have endured more than a decade of neoliberal reign by Mark #Rutte and we tried to warn you when you said he would do wonders as a #NATO General Secretary. Rutte rather lies and blames the victim than stand up for something that is both tactically and morally right.

OK I'll name it then. Linux et al are not screen reader accessible and exclude blind people like myself, who are forced to use windows, because that does have good screen reader accessibility through NVDA, an open source community effort. The first commenter who so much as utters CLI or accessible coconut gets a block.

@blogdiva If you read some comments, people are asking her to verify this (?fake?) tweet. Wouldn't be the first time. Also, tinkebell as an artist is not without controversy over her exploitation of asylum seekers as props in her work.

@coffee4danz I'm blind and for me alt text is the Big Special Thing about Mastodon. If someone posts a meme, I'm in on the joke. Someone shares beautifiul moss, or their cat, I'm in on the beauty or fun or whatever. I'm now 62, and this is the first time I entered a community and a culture where people grant me this kind of access and community. So grateful for people who do alt text.

Please, well meaning sighties! I know you have good intentions. But please, please don't let AI bots do your alt text. As a blind screen reader user I have no way to know whether the generic descriptions describe anything meaningful or accurate. In the meantime, you're flooding my timeline with AI garbage. I've already started unfollowing people because of their firehose of AI alt text. Thankyou
