Whereas @torproject is specifically designed to be incapable of doing so, even if all their maintainers were simultaneously held at gunpoint.

I don't think the fundamental approach of TBS is one that I'd want widely adopted but like, I'm happy it exists as part of a panoply of different people trying to create different solutions and I genuinely hope that at some point there can be some kind of reconciliation here and maybe he can pick a better set of authoritative instances or something

I totally have a health relationship with this platform. Totally. Being isolated at home for two and a half years with nothing to do (like actually nothing, no TV or books or video games) thanks to a brain injury really sets the stage for a healthy relationship with social media.

(It is not at all healthy, as my getting involved again with this fedi drama after I swore I wouldn't and my short lived attempt at interacting less proves)

Blocklists have a role, blocking has a role, defederation has a role.

But.

If you go around using a hammer to cut boards you are generally going to have a miserable time of it and end up with a lot of damage to the boards.

Use hammers for nails. Use saws for cutting boards.

If you don't have a saw and all you have is a hammer, breaking boards with a hammer is still probably not the best solution: help get a saw or manufacture a saw, and a better blocklist is not even an improvised saw.

There's a reason I'm so frustrated by the people who ddosed his servers and who are using this to direct racist harassment and other bullshit at him, it just further poisons the discourse and makes any kind of resolution more and more impossible. And it also honestly should be upsetting for anyone who cares the least bit about injustice to see him get that kind of stuff because nobody deserves racist harassment for any reason whatever.

The problem is that this keeps going because, for whatever he might have been initially right about, he's just continue to double down and double down and double down on transphobia and race reductionism and lashing out at everyone who criticizes him because his massive ego won't let him do anything else. That's become the problem at this point, because he's the catalyst for mastodon.art and their whole contingent doing what they do, because their whole thing is just kind of unquestioningly backing him up.

That's also why his claims that the idea that he has influence over the TBS block list is a lie are so nonsensical — he's literally friends with the head of one of the servers that TBS uses as a source (welsh pixie), and they unquestioningly block anything he puts on fediblock, meaning anything he wants blocked pretty much automatically has 50% of the votes it needs to be blocked. And guess what? At least one of the other servers used as a source for TBS is part of a moderator group with a private Discord and everything with mastodon.art where they coordinate moderation decisions!

Which is also why comparing tech.lgbt to kiwifarms is so awful: Ro's argument seems to be that tech.lgbt's criticism of him catalyzed an unrelated contingent of virulent racists to direct racist harassment at him in side channels, and the DDoS of him might have knocked him off the platform, therefore tech.lgbt is the same as kiwifarms. The problem is that while kiwifarms actively directs and encourages and intentionally drums up and keeps scoreboards for and aids and abets transphobic harassment, as an intentional thing that they as a community are doing themselves and are actively supporting and encouraging, tech.lgbt just criticized a black person with no knowledge that he was black at the time and unrelated racists, without their support or encouragement or desire or intention, even stochastically(!!!), used it as an excuse to harass him because guess what, racists will use any and every excuse possible to cover their harassment. So like, it isn't the same thing at all. Tech.lgbt definitely doesn't have a high score kill count for black people the way kiwifarms does for trans people, which also indicates another important and very significant with difference which is that the end goal of kiwifarms is to kill people and they use stalking and tracking and actually bring weapons and bombs in person at people to do it whereas the worst thing that the harassment directed at Ro might have achieved, according to him, is getting him to leave the platform.

@ExecGoofy like the tech.lgbt people did a very in-depth review to try to figure out if there was any racism or lies going on and there just wasn't, objectively speaking. Because as it turns out, criticizing a black man it's not the same as intentionally drumming up a racist harassment campaign towards him, no matter how often Ro repeats that to try to gaslight us, even if criticizing him can cause racists to take the opportunity to be racist and harass him in side channels, because guess what — racists will use *any and every* opportunity to harass black people.

@ExecGoofy it's so frustrating how he can just accuse people of being racist and like 50% of white people will just immediately side with him out of some misplaced sense of guilt and responsibility instead of actually analyzing the situation and figuring out whether what he is saying is right or not.

@fla @kkarhan @Mer__edith @signalapp signal end to end encrypts the actual content of your messages, yes, but it doesn't encrypt the metadata of your messages — including who sends each message, who receives it, what date and time the message was sent on, whether it was received, and stuff like that, which can be used to do all kinds of analysis in fact metadata is all that the surveillance agencies in the US even use when just passively surveilling people cuz you can actually figure out a fuck ton from just metadata). Not to mention the fact that it requires you to have a phone number for your account and that isn't encrypted either so each account is linked to your legal identity unless you have a burner phone. Signal has been promising they will set up usernames instead of phone numbers for accounts for something like 5 years now and maybe they'll release it soon but it's still a problem in the meantime.

Also to clarify I actually like and respect emotional drama stuff it just doesn't pull me in initially and can have a hard time keeping me sometimes so I need a little extra stuff I'm more inherently intrigued by most of the time
