@rscottjones@evan I meant that those are not encrypted and anyone with an admin account could read them if they really wanted. I realize now that you are talking about something different!
@jwildeboer@bryanruby@jautero Right exactly, but I've seen no evidence that BlueSky is actually taking on (or is capable of taking on) any of the burden of moderating. Threads is good example of a quadrillion dollar company that *still* can't moderate as effectively as fediverse volunteers.
@jwildeboer@bryanruby@jautero Eh, if every individual has to do the work of moderating every single little thing that comes their way it becomes exhausting really fast.
Putting the onus on the people being harassed to stop the harassment is a surefire way to discourage those people from participating (which knowing Dorsey & co I suspect might be part of the point!).
@ele I made the switch to Linux a few months ago and so far I haven't looked back. I think that for most people it's more than ready for prime time. I'm here if you want any guidance/advice on what I've learned!
@ele Honestly I haven't needed any. One thing I recommend is an "immutable" distro like Fedora Silverblue or Kinote (or the upcoming KDE distro). With an "immutable" distro the system files can't be edited so it's very difficult to break. Also this is anecdotal, but a GNOME interface *seems* to be more familiar for Mac users, and KDE for Windows but in my experience both are very easy to "get".
Other newbie friendly distros are Ubuntu, Zorin, or Mint. It's all free so I say just try them out!
@_elena This is the route I plan on going as well with my newsletter! I haven't looked into it fully yet but was surprised how seamelss and simple it appears to be.
I've actually been working on a piece similar this for a few months, but I kept questioning my knowledge and the overall premise (that "AI" companies are not viable business models), checking my data and re-writing so much that I've genuinely worried the "AI" market would collapse before it was ready to be published.
Honestly this piece by @Zitron is so comprehensive I feel liberated!
@tchambers@karaswisher@fediversenews Kara Swisher's Twitter addiction was the final straw that inspired me to start Stay Grounded. Really happy to see someone like her learning about the Fediverse.
@johnonolan ActivityPub is a protocol that better facilitates a connection between people, generative AI is a technology that better facilitates removing other humans from the interaction.
@tchambers@jaz It makes sense when you consider that not only does the Fediverse have orders of magnitude more mods/admins per user, but that those mods are more likely to be members of the community themselves, and thus better able to put things into proper context.
