@evan @timbray I’ve started to suspect that every eco-moral-panic around something that isn’t cars/trucks or beef is quietly promoted by big fossil or big ag as a deflection. Remember plastic straws?

I wish to rant about #bike technology. My rant may not generalize to anyone else, but I've patiently read other people's rants, this one is mine. I've been riding a #cargobike to work and errands since 2006, year round, accumulating 10s of thousands of miles in the process. I expect my bikes to be reliable, and as part of that, when they break, for most failures, I have the tools and ability to repair them. And of course I bike in all sorts of weather. Over the years I have also sometimes

@angelthorns @dalias @millihertz to be fair, if it's a good language, it will get used for stuff. Plenty of blockchain work got done in Go, and right now (because it's a good language for getting stuff done in a hurry that works well enough) also lots of AI, because AI is the new hotness. And also, Go gets the "easy reliable deploy" vote from malware authors.

@graydon @whitequark @regehr I worked on a tool that instrumented C/C++ source files to do detailed C/C++ spec conformance checking, at Centerline, before that known as Saber (but that caused trademark issues with Sabre airline reservations). Keeping track of types-N-stuff was hard, the product was not a commercial success, and back then so much code was so buggy. We handled stuff like placement new, even.
Another company in the business then was Parasoft. There were patent issues w/ them, too.

@graydon @whitequark @regehr The patent stuff w/ Parasoft was wild, I think they learned what we were up to, and quick fast filed a patent that would cause trouble, but because of problems with our C/C++ front end supplier we changed out implementation quite a lot (we started source-to-object, switched to source-to-source) but their patent covered source-to-object (in the style of Steffen, prior art in Software, Practice and Experience, that their patent examiner, Thomas Beausoleil,

@graydon @whitequark @regehr did not seem to think mattered even though it was cited in one of the Purify patents on which he was ALSO the examiner). So it was sort of a predatory patent whiff, but also, one of our executives, loose lips.
But top-level conversation, WTF, use Rust or Go or Java or GTFO.

@whitequark it’s really not that, and that’s sort of an insulting way to talk about it. It takes time to change, people are busy, people have constraints you might not know about.

@whitequark @julesh @typeswitch there's no lack of interesting designs, the problem is that there's so much to know, and the installed base is a giant pool of tar where people will happily stay until the pain of change is lower than the pain of staying. This gives a certain bonus to languages that change "not too much" (30 years out of date) since they can make for an easier step.

@dalias @seachanger someone's got to write that app and run the databases. Part of me has no idea why this never happened, but I also know that Uber does a spectacular amount of IT work, they make decently large contributions to Golang (just, they're large enough that this makes sense for them), so maybe there's something about the problem I don't understand.
There's also places like remote-ish FL suburbs, that have no taxi service. There's limos, that's about it.

@kolya @dalias @spzb @robpike I loathe any MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY format because for many dates (including my birthday, spouse, and 1 kid) there is a little ambiguity. I don't care if it is "standard", it sucks, I write all my US-normie dates DD-Month-YYYY and all my sensible person dates YYYY-MM-DD.

@quinn registration and access is vote-suppressing bullshit, and your reaction is part of the plan. And, sadly, there's a whole lot of stupid people who have no doubts about their opinions or reservations about their ignorance, they are going to vote.

@cstross @isaackuo @graydon and also, image recognition is nothing like the LLM stuff, it trains fast and cheap and runs on tiny hardware (source: niece's friend's boyfriend who worked in that industry, also looking for a job; and TinyGo-powered flying drone demos, that recognize human faces, now).

@carnage4life Are we required to be rooting FOR someone? Altman's recent history is problematic (eyeball scanning for cryptocurrency sounds like a colossal grift, especially since crypto is crime all the way down), and "fair use for we but not for thee", nope, nope, nope. That's just intellectual looting at scale.
