"why do all popular languages seem to be from over fifteen years ago" because it takes a lot of work and a long time to make a language and to make it usable by other people and to make it useful and accessible to other people. (and we have to ask, who is funding all this work?) next question.

@julesh @typeswitch that's easy: language design in the wild advances a few thousand deaths at a time

@typeswitch The real question is why even though all the popular languages are only 15 years old, they are all 30 years out of date

@dr2chase @julesh @typeswitch or until the people who stuck to them retire

@whitequark @julesh @typeswitch there's no lack of interesting designs, the problem is that there's so much to know, and the installed base is a giant pool of tar where people will happily stay until the pain of change is lower than the pain of staying. This gives a certain bonus to languages that change "not too much" (30 years out of date) since they can make for an easier step.

@dr2chase and once they retire none of those things matter anymore!

@whitequark it’s really not that, and that’s sort of an insulting way to talk about it. It takes time to change, people are busy, people have constraints you might not know about.
