It seems that there is a campaign in the Netherlands to encourage people to move from WhatsApp to Signal (@signalapp).
And considering lots of my (fairly) old Dutch contacts still in my phone's contact list are now moving (I see a fair amount of "<user> is now on Signal" messages), it seems to be working!
@bert_hubert I maintain PHP's date/time string parser, and I feel your pain. Even more so because people think it can just parse anything you throw at it. It's pretty good, but it's not magic.
@Gargron I would love it to grow, and I think the Fediverse is a very important ecosystem.
But to achieve that, Mastodon also needs to grow up with much better user safety tools.
Especially things that some other platforms have, such as controlling who can reply or answer.
I realise that's not necessarily that easy to implement, but I think that without it, a lot of people will no longer find this a safe (and fun) enough place.
Our uni had these IDE models in every computer in practical rooms. It was vastly better to use than 3¼ disks, as they were so unreliable that we used to make 3 copies of all of our work. I doubt they still have them somewhere.
@HauntedOwlbear I do still have one, but it's in a different country from where I am. Will probably be able to access it mid March though if that helps?
@annika That bill sounds like the same BS as the Online "Safety" Act that just got passed in the UK last month. As your link says, it's not going to do the things it sets out to do.
