Possibly even worse- they stripped out the abortion language, and re-emphasised 14 about 10 times.

So the very, very clear goal is to make fetal personhood a thing, and have the 14th apply to it. This would kneecap abortion, IVF, and similar.

They're going for the worse play.

One of the more telling things about people who just quote various things that Baldwin said, is I've actually had pushback when I mentioned (in passing!) that he was queer, accusing me of inventing a narrative.

It's almost like being an outsider in an outsider group of an outsider group informed some of his opinions.

Yeah this is where it starts to get creepy for me, honestly. Like, I don't love it when someone blocks me, but then you move on. Refusing to accept it REALLY quickly moves it into 'But I deserve to be able to make you listen to me'.

Is there...any way for that to not go to an ugly place? It's reasonably low stakes, but think what you're asking?

I think it's impressive that we are here, at this stage, and they're still printing headlines about 'carbon neutral' like that actually means fuckall. It's been very clear it doesn't for forever! It's a fake term that is made up explicitly to screw with avoiding EPA regulations. It's so made up it's almost comical, but somehow google isn't even particularly trying to just write a check for it.

No no, it's not racist, they're just placing cameras in all the areas with a lot more black motorists, because statistically black motorists do a lot more crimes. Don't you see how often they're pulled over and arrested?

It's just such an impressive bit of circular logic and self-justification, up there with the 'shot sensing' microphones (that never really worked, anyway!)

@mekkaokereke The framing in the headline is something. 'overproducing' makes it seem like there is a set amount that should be created, and more than that is inherently 'too much', because the concept of more than the minimum is crazy.

It's priming people to certain mindsets right from the get go, via implication that there is an absolute set appropriate amount of 'green stuff's to worry about.

And do not forget that there is a moral attachment inherent to it. Failure to reach that minimal rung is amoral- you spent too much money on something else, or were too proud to work, because any other reason is incompatible with the cultivated ecosystem. Therefore, you are lazy, or stupid, and not 'worth it', and if you just 'tried a bit harder' you would have the money required for start up capital, and push into the monied classes.

The failure point must be the person.

Frankly it's not even well reworded.

The entire argument is 'Humans will exist in x years. We can make sure they're descended from you by doing y. Don't you have a moral obligation to your descendants to keep your race/grouping alive?'

This is literally the entire 'master race' concept rephrased to get rid of 'and that's why we will defend all the lesser races' overt text (remember the nazi posters shielding black people?).

Nowadays we're getting things like 'Well you weren't explicitly told that if you said this you would be fired, so it was your OWN CHOICE to not say that'.

Everything you said is correct, and was entirely my point of view until I spoke with a lawyer friend earlier today (and it's absolutely a concern to keep thinking about!).

But he made the case that it might be a not very subtle attack on the 5th's credibility, and should have been tossed on that because if you don't reinforce standing as a precedent it's potential that we could get wild judgements that show up based on feeling, basically.

So it's the right judgement, but...

I find it more offensive that they are insecure children who can't handle the concept of people doing things they don't like, or being happy being different than them. And yet they actually have the power in this equation.

And I was really troubled that she just decided to state that she's going to sue the publications saying things about her to get them to stop. That should be something you learn doesn't work when you're about 10. I'd say ask the closest judge, but...

Oh yes, in the heat of the moment, almost nobody can just say 'WEll, fuck, you just dismantled my argument that I was emotionally tied to, now I am entirely on your side.'

A few minutes/hours/days later you come back and say 'damn, you had a good point'. Or you can say 'Okay, give me a moment on that' to give yourself emotional distance on it. But generally you can't disentangle yourself immedately.

But you can leave presents and have someone realize you were right, later

You're never going to argue someone down off a position, directly.

The absolute best, and this is terribly rare, is if you make a good point, and walk away, and *period of time* later they suddenly realize 'fuck, they were completely right'.

If you want that goal, try to think of a memorable, pithy, well phrased and persuasive point. If you don't have one yet, don't bother to reply. There will be another nazi later. Time your bon mot and leave it as an emotional landmine

My strongest opinion about him was that of all the various celeb penises I've been unwillingly exposed to over the years, his is one of the largest (It's not a particular fetish/interest of mine in general, I did mean unwillingly).

There's probably a data point with Ginny Thomas being discarded because 'She's just his wife' vs Hunter that ends in sexism town, with 'but someone might actually LISTEN to his son'.

It's actually something he's been saying in speeches for a bit now, just turning the dial up more and more with how explicit it is (and I don't think this is the first time he just said completely immune to everything, to be clear).

It's really bad. QI is already a goddamn nightmare, expanding it to be limitless and uncontrolled so there isn't even a pretend check is awful.

He's also basically packaging it as these cops can shoot the darker skinned people, keep you safe.

@Adam_Cadmon1 I just had to explain to someone fairly recently why 'well spoken' is a dog whistle sometimes - because you don't say it about white people! ( Articulate, incisive, clear, impassioned- though even that one maybe).

It turns out that if you are using the same compliment you use for a 7 year old for an adult, you should at least double check.

( I don't blame my friend, he thought it was a little weird but headlines can just be strange, it was re: Obama and coded messaging).

I am happier than not that Trump got 34 convictions.

I am also happy to hijack any conversational fork about things like 'But it really does seem unfair that the prosecutor goes last before the defense, as Trump pointed out' with 'Yes! Absolutely! Let's reform that!' because fucked if I care who said it that got their attention, the point is that they might actually be able to focus on things that could help.
