@skinnylatte Somewhere else on the mental images spectrum, I had to learn that when neurotypicals say “Wow, how long has it been?” they actually don’t want to know the date when we met last, where we were, what they were wearing, what the light looked like, etc. It’s a very detailed snapshot, or more like short-form video because there’s also sound. Or like a couple of weeks ago I randomly bumped into someone I’d never met but I recognized their name from them messaging me once on LinkedIn four years ago and in their pfp back then they were wearing a black and white striped top and their hair was parted differently and was less wavy.
NTs think I must be obsessed with them in particular instead of just along for the ride with my brain, so I don’t tell them anymore.
@skinnylatte I feel like this kind of thing only happens when scientists get to cross-pollinate, and we should be making way more inter-disciplinary hangouts happen to further this kind of magic. This is the second instance in my timeline this morning!
@skinnylatte Ooh, have fun! I really wanted to take trains on a family trip to LA and Santa Barbara last week, but with six of us it was too expensive. Enjoy it a little extra for me!
@skinnylatte I like food, don't mind cooking if it's not every day, but I definitely don't have the warm fuzzies for food that you do. I was a very picky eater growing up (ND, but none of us knew that then) and my family made a huge deal of it. I say "made", but I now eat a wider variety of foods than my parents and they still mention it at least a few times a year. Once I was made to keep collard greens in my mouth for eleven hours because I couldn't swallow them and wasn't allowed to spit them out.
Eating at the home of a new person is still intensely anxious-making for me, because there are some flavors and textures I still can't handle and I desperately want to avoid giving offense.
It's also just a slog, for me, having to eat every day, maybe several times. In fact, it's 4pm and I haven't gotten up the motivation to put something together and eat at all yet today. I like food when I'm eating it, but getting to that point can be hard.
@skinnylatte Some of us need vests like service animals wear, so when we need to be alone in our heads we can pop them on and folks will know to leave us alone and not be mad about it.
@skinnylatte I love reading posts like this, because my own experience of the transition from winter to spring is more like losing a friend and gaining enemies (searing brightness and heat, mosquitos).
Being able to bring to mind people who thrive in this weather makes it easier to get on with. ❤️ Like "So-and-so must be super happy right now!"
Ironically, the person I used to think of for this moved to Norway. 😂
Just now I misread "Neurodiverse" as "Neuroverse", and I loved intensely the idea of using #Neuroverse as a fully inclusive way to describe the whole multi-dimensional space of our brains and their mysterious ways.
@dahukanna@tedinski@inthehands Right in one! And I don’t blame the students; they’ve been successfully convinced by our educational system that learning is essentially just assimilation.
@tedinski@inthehands When I started using active learning techniques in my classes (math) my student evaluations completely polarized. Some students really hated me for it, because they felt like I wasn’t “teaching” them.
