    "Obedient children are happy children"

    Interesting video from Zoe Bee about PragerU (a conservative propaganda organization, not a university) & their videos on parenting advice.

    Since their 'educational' children's content is approved for use in FL and now maybe TX public schools it's worth exploring what they say,

    Zoe deconstructs "Obedient children are happy children" & does a great job-- but this is an aphorism I've heard before. But in a very different context.

      @LauraLangdon @futurebird I
      I was never a parent. With my gee-kids, my wife gradually taught me this.

      I'd say, "If you don't punish them, they'll be totally out of control!"

      She'd say, "Yes, definitely. Also if you *do* punish them, only then, you also get the added effect of everyone feeling bad about themselves, and no actual problem solved. Solve actual problems."

      (I am trainable, albeit somewhat slowly.)

      @futurebird My daughter’s pediatrician asked me how I disciplined her (she was two!), and when I said I don’t so much discipline as figure out what the problem is (hungry, tired, sensory overload, etc.) he was mystified. He was like “But if she’s having a tantrum you put her in time out, right?”

      No I don’t, because remote debugging is hard? 🤨

      Though really I think it's a bit of a failure on my part if I have to spend too much time telling young people exactly what to do.

      I want them to develop good judgement (for their age) and not have to ask about every little thing. I've been working on answering fewer questions and saying "Well what do you think you should do next?" more often...

      My point is that when every request from an adult is reasonable and when there is an economy of such instruction: it's easy to be obedient.

      My mentor when I started teaching would say "Obedient children are happy children" but what she meant by this was that you need to create conditions where following the rules, and doing what's asked makes sense to children. Where it's achievable. Because at some level nearly always kids want to do what's "right" -

      This is true even of adults. We like to hear "good job, you did it right."

      So a child who keeps getting in trouble is probably even more miserable than the adults who are mad at her.
