@HistoPol@david@darren@Bluedepth well in this case its more about being specific and understanding what the words we use mean and where they come from.
This matters because if we water down language so much until all words can mean the same thing, it also becomes hard to express ourselves accurately. And marginalised experiences like in this case that of refugees become even more invisible.
@Bluedepth@david@darren@HistoPol Please dont refer to people moving instances on Social Media as "refugees". Its extremely disrespectful to actual refugees to suggest that Changing instance is anything like the hardships involved in being forced to leave your physical home due to factors like war, dictatorships, political repression and Climate Change...
@herr_irrtum@lightweight@Salty@trib@meejah@jdmcg particularly with video editing, yes kdenlive for example is great, easy to use, you can make a video with it (especially if it's not such a complex project or you don't have to do too much colour work or effects).
But kdenlive has it's limitations, also how it uses the hardware, so that for us for our current project it's not good enough. And there is no open source video editor that is.
In a learning setting I would agree that learning video editing with something open source like kdenlive could make sense. And for people who really want to work with it the option to then learn with something more powerful like davinci resolve or any of the others.
@herr_irrtum@lightweight@Salty@trib@meejah@jdmcg another example I find interesting is REAPER. It's not open source, it is however very cheaply available or even free as you are not forced to pay. And also has a great community, many possibilities to adapt it to your needs, extensions you can download, etc. Its ended up being my DAW of choice, as somehow I didn't really get on so well with Ardour back in 2017 when I tried it out.
@lightweight@herr_irrtum@Salty@trib@meejah@jdmcg I believe that it has improved. for me it was too many things to learn, I was still getting to grips with Linux (grew up with computers but basically didn't use them for eight years until around 2016). Along with trying to survive and all the rest, I actually just wanted to make some music and faffing about with JACK was not high on my menu.
Ended up finding this explanation on WikiHow about how to choose a Mastodon server. "You can't really pick the wrong server on Mastodon" seems to me not great advice.
Was specifically thinking of this after seeing a new account that seems to be aimed at reaching a lot of people joining an instance that I know is at least limited by a lot of other instances. But that at first glance from the name and stated purpose would seem to fit the aims and subjects of that account.
It must be very hit and miss for people and groups coming in to the Fediverse without knowing the detailed histories to know which instances are federated with which. Those people then of course suffer lack of visibility and connection without actually having anything to do with for example poor moderation decisions of their instance (or even being aware of them).
Are there strategies for dealing with this? Would be interested on others perspectives on this, I assume it must be an issue that many people encounter.
@abolisyonista lol that is such a funny tool. just tried a little snippet from one of our old toots to make it "more passionate" and the results are hilarious:

@obrerx@actuallyautistic It is nothing new that activists, and also climate activists, are put in jail. This is the day to day reality. In a way its maybe good that through the high profile of Greta Thunberg this becomes more common knowledge.
I guess what I was more responding too was other comments like this one:
"I have begun to <wonder> if blocking roads and oil terminals is treated as "terrorism" could it lower the bar to doing things that cause actual terror?"
Which are ignorant of the fact that this is not a new thing, it was happening a decade, two decades, 50 years ago. What has changed is that the climate movement became more mainstream and widespread, so more people see it. (and also because it affects more people with more privileges; in other movements which are more marginalised like the Kurdish movement people are imprisoned for much less and generally receive much more repression).
I mean, its right to be angry and shocked about it, but the point is the governments are not on our side, never were, and never will be. They have been using this narrative with slight variations for decades and probably hundreds of years.
We've put together a #zine about the experiences of people living with chronic #illness within #activist movements.
We explore questions like: What attitudes&behaviours towards health&care do we carry over from mainstream culture? What hinders people with illness from taking part in our movements? How can we make our movements more inclusive&move towards more of a culture of caring?
Reflecting on these subjects is key to growing stronger movements that are able to create real alternatives to the capitalist nightmare and to bring down this harmful system!
Here is the zine to read online or to print at home. If you want to print in a "professional" print shop, please contact us for the print layout version.
