@joeo10 whenever I think about the state of Internet service in the US, I get angry. This is what happens when you privatize infrastructure and then double-down by granting regional monopolies (not to mention passing laws written by companies, showering companies with taxpayer money without holding them accountable for results, etc.).

@KydiaMusic @emsquared it was probably even more influential on the first Star *Trek* film, which doubled down on the pacing problems inherent in using lots of long visual effects sequences.

@joeo10 @HopelessDemigod seriously, just regulate apps/corporations to not enable spying on their customers. Unfortunately rich US donors have their finger in this pie too, so politicians can't do anything meaningful about it.

@HauntedOwlbear @mos_8502 good point: regardless of how bsky turns out, it's on track to be remembered as one of the major elements of Twitter's demise, and that's good.

"Don't complain that I post paywalled links" okay but I'm also not going to jump through a bunch of hoops to read the thing you linked, so you just wasted both of our time. May as well have linked a rickroll.

@joeo10 people can feel that both parties have sold out the poor and working classes, but they can't see it clearly through the haze of billionaire controlled media, so they're just yanking back and forth on the biggest lever they have - even though the only two settings are "bad" and "horrific".

It's clear that the DNC is deeply compromised by moneyed interests, to the point that they just aren't capable of meaningful reflection or action.

@robdaemon so then it's more "JavaScript developers are the easiest/cheapest to find, so this is the fastest/cheapest path to get what we want" which is one level worse lol

@joeo10 part of the problem is that the groups she lists tend to have a lot of money to contribute to campaigns.

YouTube seems to have broken most embeds on Mastodon, Discord, etc. I'm not going to wait for their bloated app or a web browser to fight for RAM on my wimpy tablet just to watch a video linked from a shitpost.

@joeo10 I've been running DNS based solutions (currently pihole) on my home LAN for several years, and I still need to use ublock origin because some sites act really weird when they can't load ads due to DNS.

I'm also not sure how feasible DNS based blocking is with mobile devices on public networks etc.

Just saw this headline under "positive news": "9-year-old sells lemonade to help pay for dad's kidney surgery"

This is not fucking positive or heartwarming, it's dystopian!

It's utterly horrible that we've decided that allowing people to become billionaires is more important than universal access to lifesaving medical care.

@thomasfuchs it's been about 20 years, but I once won an eBay auction and then the seller...didn't send anything. Completely ghosted me.

I had to fight with eBay & PayPal for weeks to get a refund. I kept telling them that it wasn't my fault that the person never shipped, and they finally relented.

Looks like Google is up to no good with Chrome again, so people on here are once again putting Firefox on a pedestal. So predictable.

@synlogic I don't really. I believe that it is currently the least-worst option, but I don't trust that it will stay that way due to most of Mozilla's funding coming from Google.
