It’s ramped up since then, and we are all susceptible. Russian propaganda has moved far beyond influencing our elections. They are trying to destroy our morale and our unity, not just as a country, but throughout the West. It’s not just about taking down our government from within. It’s about making each of us, personally, feel depressed, outraged, and isolated, by fabricating stories on the left and right, and blowing small differences out of proportion.
I’m going to post this even tho I already retooted it from the original poster, b/c it’s so important.
I campaigned for Bernie in the primaries in 2016. I was being bombarded with anti-Hillary videos on FB and I believed them, to the point I almost didn’t vote for her. Fortunately since I have ADHD and voracious reading is how I get my dopamine, I also read a ton of established mainstream media content, and was able to (eventually) see past the propaganda. I was lucky.
Today, thanks to many cool and attractive people buying my tracks on Bandcamp and Mirlo this past month, I was able to donate $80 to vote.org!
My latest single, When You See The Moon expresses the desire that so many people in my country want to see justice done. Thanks to everyone who bought my music and also to those who contributed extra!
There is still time to buy any of my tracks and I’ll donate again!
Singing is challenging b/c your instrument's shape is completely unique and requires sustenance and sleep and has hormones and emotions and a whole ecosystem inside it, and all those things affect the way it sounds.
I just went on Facebook to remind a friend of mine to vote, and saw that he passed away back in 2019.
I can't find any information about him other than someone mentioning it in a photo of him. No obituary online, and most of his family had already passed away. No one to memorialize his account, so several of us had been wishing him happy birthday and posting on his page after the fact.
:sadness:
I just thought he did like most of us and kept his FB account but just never visited anymore.
It’s one reason I don’t post much on algorithm-driven social media anymore. The algorithm favors the extroverts and attention-seeking ppl who post pictures and memes on a regular basis, and hides the posts of the normal, quiet people who just want to share occasionally and connect with their friends.
I felt like such a shitty friend, but also, I felt bad that Jann probably thought she was being ignored by her friends and alone when she was already going thru such a tough time.
I stopped using FB on the regular when, thanks to the algorithm, I missed the fact that one of my best friends’ mom had passed away. This was before there were the different emojis available to react to someone’s post with anything other than a thumbs up. So Jann was posting about her cancer treatments, and thanks to FB manipulating the algorithm, her posts weren’t getting seen by many people. Because no one was “liking” her posts, even if they saw them and cared about what she was going thru.
Because god forbid you see any actual updates from your friends, rather than a parade of ads and pages you don’t want to follow in your timeline! We can’t have that! People connecting? Being SOCIAL? On SOCIAL MEDIA?!?!
How will Zuckerberg make enough money to buy politicians and keep his skin moist if you only use FB to connect with your loved ones? How, Sheila??!
Also fuck Facebook for changing their format so you don’t even have to go to someone’s page anymore to wish them happy birthday. You just get a notification, and if you click on it, FB takes you to a separate page, a liminal birthday space, where you can write each of your friends (that has a birthday that day, or any you missed recently) a birthday wish without ever having to visit their page.
Share this with your conservative and undecided friends/family/acquaintances who don’t understand how the government works, and keep asking why hasn’t Harris already done the things she said she’ll do.
I grew up in one of the worst Red states by all meaningful metrics—healthcare, education, quality of life, roads, employment, etc. There are a lot of lovely people there, but the overall culture was one of pettiness, gossip, unacknowledged racism, and “fake nice.” Growing up, I dreamed of moving, even if just to a slightly better adjacent Red state. I’m glad instead I decided <4 months before graduation to move to a Blue state, and one of the BEST Blue states, too. It’s paradise in comparison.
