Assuming if this holds up in the SCOTUS, the #TikTok ban is going to be the first major step in the US government banning any and all non-US services that they don't like and it's going to be very chilling for the #FirstAmendment.

If you're using non-US services right now (like I am with #Proton and #Nextcloud as a example), you should be very concerned even terrified by this ruling.

@HopelessDemigod It would have been nice if instead of this chilling blow to the First Amendment, Congress should have passed a federal privacy law as I have been saying for years now. I'm sure that would alievate it.

I suspect the key difference is China is considered a national security threat and that has to be taken into consideration otherwise the Supreme Court has ruled that government regulation of First Amendment rights must be “narrowly tailored,” which means that laws must be written precisely to place as few restrictions as possible on First Amendment liberties.

An yeah, what a disaster for most Dems in Congress that voted for this bullshit too in a election year no less, I'm sure it's one of the reasons why they lost badly.

It would have been nice if Congress actually passed a federal #privacy law instead and now it looks like Meta/FB is going to be the huge beneficiaries and ultimate winners when the dust settles.

@joeo10 @HopelessDemigod seriously, just regulate apps/corporations to not enable spying on their customers. Unfortunately rich US donors have their finger in this pie too, so politicians can't do anything meaningful about it.
