@thomasfuchs It feels like parents sharing pictures created by their young children at childcare centers or early school. Nobody but a parent would think they're art. Fine to share to show kids' creative minds are developing but not worth giving more than a quick 👍 to
@FantasticalEconomics@jackofalltrades Years back NZ feminist economist Marilyn Waring pointed out how narrow antiquated views on productivity measured only by GDP are.
When a woman is giving birth, the work of a doctor or nurse or midwife is counted but the mother's labour(ing) is ignored because no one has put a dollar value on it.
@iuculano It's pretty hypocritical hearing American people including senators say they don't want the Chinese government to have the power to demand people's data histories and information.
The US Stored Communications Act (for in USA) and the CLOUD Act (for overseas) give the US government power to request and access personal data held by any any US based or owned company. The average American is more at risk from their own government than from the Chinese government!
@siege Most science and maths graduates are familiar with cis as a term for "on same side as". Same with geographers. "Well educated" may not include all subject areas I guess.
@cstross Of course! It doesn't hurt to remind bystanders watching this thread (stream of consciousness) to pick up and read yours too! Even the warnings about too much maths being bad for some brains are worth sharing! 😉
@cstross The problem isn't that tech billionaires read #SF#ScienceFiction when they were young, the problem is that they didn't keep on reading!
Had they kept reading #books by a diverse range of authors they may have had better ideas!!
The Monk and Robot #books by Becky Chamber are great for a better balance. Some of Nnedi Okorafor's books outline alternatives too. Charles Stross has written cautionary tales 😉 Kim Stanley Robinson offered better ideas they could try. #SFF#bookstodon
@mmasnick Thanks. I don't use Instagram so while I may want to favourite posts by people I would follow in the Fediverse, I won't leave Mastodon to do so.
Account replication sounds like a bot reposting content without any interaction options. Is that right?
@LadyDragonfly Some people have forgotten that before the attack helicopter short story intended to be humourous and written by trans woman, Isabel Fall, the attack helicopter meme arose on Reddit. Many blamed the writer for both uses, and she stopped writing. Here's one person's apology and explanation. https://www.patreon.com/posts/public-apology-53607314
The duo Martha Wash and Izora Armstead were known as Two Tons O' Fun when they were backup singers for disco singer Sylvester. They didn't write this song but they had fun with it.
Here's Sade (aka Helen Folasade Adu) with the song Smooth Operator she and band mate Ray St. John co-wrote. He sultry voice and stylings influenced many rappers and hiphop artists including Missy Elliott. #SheMakesMusic #JukeboxFridayNight https://youtu.be/4TYv2PhG89A
Jimi Hendrix playing Spanish Castle Magic, with the added magic that was Woodstock #MagicSongs for #TuneTuesday So classic my partner recognised it from the video across the room. https://youtu.be/ErLK_ndjHck
Many people in the USA seem to be pushing for justice not only for unsolved deaths but also for wrongly convicted people. Probably not unrelated to #BLM and other social movements
@gnitro Have you ever cooked for friends or hosted a pot luck dinner only to have one of the guests get sick from a food allergy? It felt a bit like that. Guilty feelings even there wasn't any intentional harm.
FWIW if you check that # JukeboxFridayNight thread for # RockNRollHeaven, I hope you find some tracks you like.
@gnitro sorry for my hasty response. 😳 You're right about the issue of posting bias. Even when posting historically prominent songs or artists there's also the issue of appropriation and we should try to give recognition to where music comes from
