   @FantasticalEconomics @jackofalltrades Years back NZ feminist economist Marilyn Waring pointed out how narrow antiquated views on productivity measured only by GDP are.

   When a woman is giving birth, the work of a doctor or nurse or midwife is counted but the mother's labour(ing) is ignored because no one has put a dollar value on it.

   If a company pollutes waters or land, their sales efforts are "productive" but their destructive harms to the environment don't count.

     Claudia Goldin is the most recent winner of Nobel Prize in #Economcs and the first women to win it for her solo work. She has dedicated her career studying things her mostly-male peers were comfortable ignoring: women in the workplace.

     She is a wonderful example of why diversity matters. She has made the field a better by expanding the focus beyond what wealthy white men care about and, in doing so, is helping make the world a better place.
