@FantasticalEconomics @jackofalltrades Years back NZ feminist economist Marilyn Waring pointed out how narrow antiquated views on productivity measured only by GDP are.

When a woman is giving birth, the work of a doctor or nurse or midwife is counted but the mother's labour(ing) is ignored because no one has put a dollar value on it.

If a company pollutes waters or land, their sales efforts are "productive" but their destructive harms to the environment don't count.

Marilyn Waring: The unpaid work that GDP ignores -- and why it really counts
      from Marilyn Waring
If you: do laundry, are (or have been) pregnant, tidy up, shop for your household or do similar labor, then by GDP standards, you're unproductive. In this visionary talk, economist Marilyn Waring seeks to correct the failures of this narrow-minded system, detailing why we deserve a better way to measure growth that values not just our own livelihood but the planet's as well.
