@evan @mattblaze does Canada not elect local and province officials, or run those elections separately from federal offices? It seems convenient to the voters to get it all done with at once - the multiple special elections in California to replace Swalwell are somewhere between nuisance and botheration (especially since I'm voting by fax from the EU, now).

@Strandjunker I think it's no coincidence that the global resurgence of fascism happened almost exactly one human lifetime after WW II.

@cstross @fatsam @TerryHancock FWIW a friend just had cataract-motivated lens replacement surgery and is loving being able to read without glasses again - only slightly concerned about nighttime glare issues.

@libroraptor @nddev @Kay @anne_twain @Gustodon @georgepenney as recently as 25 years ago, libraries *were* "quiet hours" in most places in the US. Then they started moving to "quiet rooms" and not particularly enforcing even that.
Perhaps this does get more people in the library, though I'm not among them. These days I just checkout ebooks, or occasionally reserve something and go in and out as fast as possible.
