@trouble @tlariv @lauren @darnell and don't get me started on this nonsense about raised seals on birth certificates! Valid certifs were considered not valid if it did not have a raised seal, which of course millions did not have depending upon when they were issued. Laminated certificate--you're out of luck, pal. There is no end to this "prove who you are" game, and that's the entire point when it comes to voter id as a means to suppress.

@jeffowski what troubles me so much about anti-vax parents is this thought: most parents love their children deeply. Many anti-vaxxers think they are protecting their kids by not vaxing. They act out of love for their kids, not out of selfishness or greed or indifference or an active wish to inflict harm. Their distrust of authority trumps the unassailable historic evidence Jeff posted about. Baffling and so very sad.

@forpeterssake @gvwilson a new paradigm might be to jettison TV shows altogether (on all devices and platforms) and use the time to read books or volunteer in the community. I have not watched any TV at all since early 1990s and my life is rich and rewarding.

I simply cannot wrap my head around the concept of someone thinking they know better on a subject than someone who has spent a lifetime developing deep knowledge. The people who thought all their teachers are full of BS slept through the critical thinking skills classes. I feel sorry for them 'cause they missed out on a good thing.

@estelle As you point out, we are so used to subject-verb-object word order that passive voice can insinuate the object is the actor. As in, "mistakes were made" = the mistakes made themselves!

@OGjester @phaedral to your point, Jester: my takeaway is that the overarching and most prescient theme in this film was not about getting mad. The main theme warns of the danger of turning straight news reporting into programmed entertainment, complete with giggling talking heads posing as news anchors, Sybil the Soothsayer and her sidekicks. Take a look at TV and other news media today-- I rest my case. Or, I should say, Paddy Chayevsky rests his case.

@VeroniqueB99 part of this is misinformation. As a single and later a married woman, I had my own bank account without a man's permission well before 1974. While most married women were dependent upon hubby's income, state (not federal) banking laws and the various banks' policies covered who was allowed to open an account, the usual criterion being age. To say women were not allowed to have their own acct prior to 1974 is not true.

@Millicent @VeroniqueB99 married people with joint accounts would typically share the same credit rating based on joint activity, wouldn't they? That was true for me until I got divorced, after which I established my own credit rating based on my history. I do not dispute women's economic dependence upon their husbands. However. I am unaware of federal legal mandates covering womens' financial assets and credit ratings.
