@leahmcelrath.bsky.social I was struck by this while reading a book about the Viking period of Europe. The tools that the Roman Catholic church offered burgeoning nation states weren't peace, love, and understanding. They were legitimized rule, clerics that could serve as bureaucrats and administrators, propagandists, tax collectors, and justifications for violence like crusades against the Pagan neighboring rivals. No wonder that leaders converted to such a convenient system to maintain power.
@skinnylatte Deride it if you like, but it's still exposing Americans to what their cities could look like, and it does seem to be slowly seeping into the American consciousness. Most of social media is shallow and vapid, so they might as well talk about trains and good infrastructure. Maybe more Americans should be jealous of other countries, if that would build support for any transportation method other than the car.
@tek@alltherum The handy thing about Mint is that is has all the advantages of Ubuntu, but the layout is familiar to Windows users. It was an easy switch for me.
@tarheel@mekkaokereke I doubt she would have voted for Trump, but she definitely saw the expansion of voting rights as a zero-sum game and was willing to climb on the backs of black women and other minorities if it meant getting white women the vote.
@mekkaokereke You can tell he never hears this kind of talk. Most powerful men and women prefer to not hear opposition, it's understandable but unhealthy for decision-makers. He's utterly unprepared to hear people challenge him to his face when he can't immediately lash out.

The latest Urbanist Agenda podcast is really, REALLY good. Jason Slaughter of @notjustbikes and Doug Gordon of @TheWarOnCars have a really interesting conversation, and they make you wish you could grab beers with them too.
The podcast is already out on #NebulaTV, so if you subscribe (and you should) you can check it out, or you can wait until it drops in the general feed.
@nocontexttrek Bebe Neuwirth as the Malcorian scientist that wants to "make love with an alien," to which Riker is only too happy to oblige. I think it was the nuttiest TNG episode, and her cameo is truly funny.
