My kid wants to install Linux on their gaming PC.
(Gimme a sec here. I'm not crying, you're crying. Anyway.)
What distro would you recommend for someone who wants to run recent AAA games on good hardware?

@tek I had good luckl with Ubuntu
@grueproof Serious? That would be conveniently widely used. And it's OK with graphics card and game support?
@tek *HIGH FIVE TEK JR*
I literally just ran my first ever sudo comand. :apartyblobcat:
I chose Mint because apparently it works well with Steam and my 4070 (can confirm the 4070 part)
@tek I'd do the usual checks and searches, but yeah. I had an older NVidia card and an AMD processor and had no issues. Ran Cyberpunk 2077 flawlessly.
@grueproof Kickass. That’s exactly the kind of setup I had in mind.
@alltherum I’m a proud dad!
Ah, cool. I'd used Mint but it's been so long that my experience isn't relevant anymore.
@grueproof @ozoned Righteous. Thanks!
If it were me running it for my own purposes, I'd be way more cavalier about the decision. "Oh, I've gotta compile the drivers myself? OK, which git branch are they on?" I don't wanna subject Tek Jr to that just yet though.
@tek Sweet. If you have issues, I know some folks who might have some insight. I know @ozoned is knowledgeable in this area.
I'll second Ubuntu (at least up to 22.04LTS; I haven't tried the most recent version.) It's boring and widely-used and has support for a lot of hardware.
One piece of advice: avoid Snap as much as possible. I went so far as to uninstall the it completely (and that was *way* satisfying) but the company seems to be doing a pivot-to-video on it and it's *terrible*.
Also: I've had much less aggravation with AMD video cards than NVIDIA, if you have a choice.
@tek@freeradical.zone I mainly use Fedora and Pop! OS for gaming. Although my games maybe aren't AAA at all (my machine isn't for those game), they could run fine most of the time.
@ufal Awesome. Thank you!
@tek I've been messing around with a few options as a gamer myself. It's tricky. Nothing is quite 100%. For the best results I recommend something Arch based. I've gone back and forth and among the *buntu distros I'd recommend Mint for stability but for gaming with all the bells and whistles actually working, something Arch-based seems like the best way to go.
I liked Manjaro best as a good starter to learn the ins and outs. It has a lot of Just Works(tm) going for it right out of the box. Wayland and everything Just Works. I don't quite 100% trust the company and it sounds like they're leaning towards doing opt-out telemetry soon (or already?) which is a Very Bad Sign(tm). But it's a good start to learn Arch and then, from there, just go to Arch itself once you know it well.
@nazokiyoubinbou Something to consider! Said kid is brand new to Linux and I’m trying to ease them in, so perhaps I won’t start with Arch-alikes, but I could see ending up there.
@tek
Linux Mint, hands down. It's basically Ubuntu without Snap, and high end games run with only a slight stutter (it DOES have to run on a compatibility layer, after all).
If the games on Steam either crash or refuse to load at all, right-click on the Steam icon and select "run with dedicated GPU."
@drakenblackknight Whoa! Very slick!
@forpeterssake @alltherum That carries some weight. I like the idea of giving them an easy transition off Windows.
@tek @alltherum
The handy thing about Mint is that is has all the advantages of Ubuntu, but the layout is familiar to Windows users. It was an easy switch for me.
@suetanvil @grueproof @ozoned Yeah, Snap is the first thing I yank on Ubuntu.
They're already on a nice Nvidia card so we're kinda bound on that course.
@razze “But you said 18.04 is going to be supported for years!”
"Well, not *all* of it.”
@tek it mostly doesn't matter anymore, pick what you like, maybe not an lts
@catsalad @tek Apple and. "Gaming PC" can't go in the same sentence.
@nazokiyoubinbou @catsalad I played Diablo 3 semi competitively on a MBP with a trackpad. Never say never.
@tek Asahi Linux ✅
@nazokiyoubinbou @catsalad I wa mostly joking. You *can* do it, but… you really probably should not.
@tek @catsalad I didn't actually say "never" 😁
I'm not saying you can't game on one at all, but it's definitely not built for gaming and in numerous ways will be a problem if you want to do gaming. And that's not even getting into issues like the lack of decent GPU (big no-no for serious gaming) and the nearly negative upgradeability path. (If I need a new GPU I don't have to buy a whole computer. I buy a GPU. I'll admit some components can be trickier -- new CPU can sometimes mean MB and RAM too -- but, it's still not a whole computer.)
@tek @grueproof There is good support _because_ it's widely used. I second Ubuntu. Runs XCOM like a dream. :)
