@eff I'm looking forward to see ISIS and Hamas content being shared freely on their platform. Because if you're going to claim to be 'politically neutral', you better be politically neutral.

@QasimRashid This is obviously complete bullshit. Insurance companies everywhere, as well as organizations like NICE are always denying lifesaving care to people. Their whole -job- is to decide what life saving care is cost effective. As we have to distribute a limited supply of care over the population.
Could you argue that in the US there are too many people grifting profits from this? Sure. But denying some care and granting others - that's their job.

@ciatmusings @QasimRashid The US spends more on health care per capita than any other country in the world. The insurance or spending isn't the problem. The grifters everywhere else in the system are. The pharmaceutical patent system, excessive diagnistic tests, the debt collectors. And let's not forget the terribly unhealthy lifestyle weighing in the system.

If ever you are inclined to feeling the EU government is not always as transparent and democratic as it should be.. You're not wrong, but I highly recommend you look into the US government and judicial system.
I promise you'll feel better.
The EU with all its flaws, is by any reasonable standard, by quite a margin, the largest, functional democracy in the world.

@EUCommission Given Hungary's opening of its borders to Russian 'immigrant workers', and the immediate threat that poses to the member states and their citizens, Hungary should be suspendes from Schengen immediately.
We've tolerated a fascist dictator in our midst long enough. When that dictator poses a direct threat to our safety we must draw the line.

@McCovican @jonny @mathew @RenewedRebecca Opt-in is only meaningful if users can make an informed decision. I think explaining a system like PPA would be a difficult task. And most users complain a lot about these types of interruption.
In my opinion an easily discoverable opt-out option + blog posts and such were the right decision.

@GossiTheDog This is not actually what the article says, it seems to say two things indendently:
- Scope 3 emissions are up primarily due to data center construction to provide cloud services.
- New technologies and generative AI pose environmental challenges going forward. -

@jeffowski The link is from 2022.. But either way, recycling plastics isn't really a climate thing. It's about plastic waste.
Like a single user paper bag has a carbon footprint several times that of a single use plastic bag.
In terms of eqCO2 emissions plastic is relatively good for the environment. It just sucks in other ways.

@jeffowski This is such a load of nonsense.
Yes. There is some of that.
But the evidence just doesn't support that being even close to the majority of it.

@AnthonyJK @blogdiva Because when you use for example an RNA reactor for vaccines you can't use it for something else. And a nurse that is injecting somebody with a vaccine can't be treating another patient.
The reason things cost money is not 'just' for profit, or 'just' for fun, it's because resources are fundamentally limited.
When you decide which groups get which vaccines for free, you make a medical trade off, not an ideological one.

@blogdiva 'all vaccinations'? Like.. Which? How often? Rabies? That's an expensive one... For something most people will never be exposed to..
Several others.. For completely healthy people? That's expensive.. Whay would you -not- do, in order to pay for that? It's all about opportunity cost.
Laissez faire, nah. But thankfully there's medical experts making smarter decisions than this take.

@sykora @aral Are you suggesting every company should always guarantee everyone's job even if they're working on something, and their area of expertise is somewhere, where there's no economic value being added?
That would make for more of a charity than anything else. Obviously companies have to eliminate certain jobs at times to make sure they focus on adding value. And they can do so humanely, that's okay.

@sykora @aral I'm not sure Mozilla has ever taken VC money? I mean... It can't even give out shares. Not even sure how that works.
And again, not a charity.
Some people will find new jobs internally. Some won't. Firing someone is no worse than -not- hiring the other, more suitable person that you could have hired for the position you placed someone in so you wouldn't have to fire them.
Also unemployment is still historically low in most of the Global North. Median unemployment 8.3 weeks.

@mpldr @en4rab What I'm surprised about is Windows 3.11 isn't an OS. So what is there to administrate? (As said, I would also hope those machines are air gapped these days)

@mpldr @en4rab Looking at this in more detail, I've yet to be able to find any evidence that this is for a train company. I've found the original job offer, but nothing in it talks of trains.
It also explicitly talks about MS-DOS, so it does sound like a genuine Win 3.11 system. Probably not for a train though.

@aral Early info suggests this may very well not have been an Israeli strike.
While there's plenty wrong with Israel's response. Now is a time when helping spread disinformation is especially unwise.
