I still see a difference between being sponsored by $EVILCOMPANY and plattforming $EVILBILLIONAIRE.
The former can be problematic, but I accept it as more or less necessary. The latter is a horrible mistake.

I use #Jabber/#XMPP mainly and Matrix only indirectly via the #slidge gateway.
When I started using Jabber in 2014, Matrix did not exist. And now I don't have a reason to migrate.
Both Jabber and Matrix are free, open, and federated, i.e. better than any walled garden, like Signal or Whatsapp.
En todo caso conectame por mi JID (Jabber id) que encontrás en mi perfil.
Government organizations (also political parties, NGOs, etc.) should choose a platform, that they control themselves, i.e. #digitalSovereignty instead of #vendorLockin!
That excludes Whatsapp, but also Signal, Telegram, Threema and other walled gardens.
Talking of onboarding #Jabber, #Prosody by @prosodyim has a very nice invitation system:
https://blog.prosody.im/great-invitations/
It allows users of an #XMPP server to invite others, which again can invite more people etc.
I got most of family and friends to #Jabber by not having centralised (i.e. WA, Signal, Telegram etc.) options myself. Only #XMPP, email, snail mail postcard. Many took the first option, some the second, very few the third.
Most are still on WA for everyone else but me, but that's their #digitalHealth issue, not mine.
Or maybe I'm too annoying to them, when they don't like my favourite IM 🙂
Not sure, if that helps you. If not, ignore me.
I'm too lazy to run my own IRC-#XMPP bridge, but there are various public #Jabber servers with biboumi.
E.g., my IRC nick is registered on #OFTC and I use it via the #biboumi instance of #movim.eu.
Movim also seems to have #slidge bridges to Telegram, Discord, and Matrix, but I don't use them, because I run my own XMPP gateway to Matrix. And don't use Telegram or Discord.
I don't need Signal, because I already use #Jabber since before Signal even existed. But I can't use Signal anyway because:
1. Phone number requirement.
2. Only Google Android and Apple iOS have first class clients, but not my #Mobian phone nor #Debian desktop.
3. Want to use server in #GDPRistan, i.e. #EU, but no #federation in Signal.
If you care about #privacy, don't #travel to #Spain.
Travellers need to state up to 42 data points, which will (officially) stored for three years. A lot of information, that can be abused by criminals for #fraud and #identityTheft.

I wasn't aware of torbrowser-launcher.
Will install soon!
Just checked: According to `check-dfsg-status`, I have exactly one package from non-free-firmware, a wifi firmware package, and one package from contrib, anbox (I don't remember, why I have it, so I remove it now). Everything else is #Debian main. Maybe that's an extraordinary simple setup?
I recommend Debian stable to most users, and I myself use stable at work. It's so great to have at least two years without having to deal with new software, but just get things done 🙂
I'm using #Debian as my one and only desktop since mid-1990s. Right now Debian 12 #bookworm (stable) at work and Debian 13 #trixie (testing) at home. I do upgrades by "sudo apt full-upgrade" all the time ("sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" was the former variant). Works for me 🤷
So many options...

Let's invent a time machine, go back to 1999, and invent #Jabber! 🙂
I have a lot of such alarms and use indeed #XMPP for it. I wrote my own #Python scripts with #slixmpp for it, but just using e.g. #goSendXMPP https://salsa.debian.org/mdosch/go-sendxmpp by @mdosch might work well enough.
IIRC, #Dino by @dino git master does already support message markup, but not in an official release, yet.
Oh, it's already in #Debian unstable, yeah! Will install today.
Dear #Jabber, #XMPP, #Snikket, #Prav (insert your favourite branding) users,
I have this #MOTO (#MUC of the day) for you:
xmpp:trains@conference.jabjab.de?join
The room subject says, it's for trainees, trainspotters, trainsexuals, traingenders, and trainists, but I'ld say, it for everyone who likes or has to travel by #train or is interested in #railway.
Btw. I'll go by #nighttrain #EuropeanSleeper to #miniDebConf #Toulouse, soon.
#transport #publicTransport #chatRoom #chat #Debian #DebConf
I prefer #Jabber, but I use Matrix, too: Via the #slidge #XMPP #gateway 🙂
Note, that #Jabber has message replies and message reactions since some time now. Replies are implemented at least in #Dino, #Gajim, #Kaidan, and #Prose. Reactions are implemented at least in #Conversations, Dino, Gajim, Kaidan, #Movim, and Prose. Probably more.
TTBOMK, the #XMPP protocol itself has threads since ages, but I'm not aware of any implementation in a client. @prose is working on it, so I heard.
