Speaking of #WebXDC: It is also used by one, two #Jabber clients now, but I'm not yet convinced, if I would want it.

It brings a large stack of web techology into the #chat client. Sure, in a very safe way, but it still adds complexity for devices without OS webview.

Useful features like shared TODO lists etc. can be implemented in #PEP or #PubSub, IMHO.

There is one application, I'ld like, however: https://webxdc.org/apps/#arcanecircle-livechat A chat in a chat! Does it use #XMPP by accident 🙂

Btw. #Kaidan by @kaidan can even send multiple images (or other files) together with a message. I'm optimistic, that this feature will be available in other clients, soon — with the spare time free software developers definition of "soon", though.

AFAIK, #Conversations offers domain hosting on their #ejabberd. I.e. they could (in theory) grab all your metadata, sell it, and send you daily reminders to buy #MobileCoin from them. However, as you own your domain, you could export your data ("XEP-0227: Portable Import/Export Format for XMPP-IM Servers") and move elsewhere. Also, Conversations is hosted in the #EU, i.e. #GDPR applies until #FriedrichMerz kills it.

There are various providers to host your own #XMPP domain or your own complete #Jabber server.

E.g. #conversations (same people as the Android client, i.e. @daniel) or #Snikkett by @snikket_im and many more.

The former is based on #Ejabberd by @ejabberd, the latter on #Prosody by @prosodyim.

#XMPP is used by billions of people in the closed, non-free manifestation of Whatsapp, Google FCM, and applications like Zoom, Fortnite, Grindr, and many more. At least, that shows us, that the techology works.

XMPP or #Jabber in the sense of an open and free #federation is a niche, indeed. Network effect, lack of marketing and very often lack of appealing client design are to blame. Jabber just does not have multi million VC funding.

Is #Invidious finally dead and buried for good? So, #RIP and let's move all our #video content to #Peertube? Other ideas?

Yes, #Debian gets frozen (or: is in freeze) when #testing becomes #stable. Still, when the process is done, calling it e.g. frozen instead of stable would (maybe!) reduce the confusion esp. of new users, who wrongly believe, stable Debian only has "stable" (= bug-free) software. The term has a double meaning, which is OK for those who know, but bad for newbies. Any other term than "stable" might be better 🙂

Renaming "#stable" to "#frozen" sounds like a good idea. Being a DD myself, I never heard it before. Or don't remember it.

Signal, Threema and similar "alternatives" to Whatsapp are siloed, walled gardens.

For our #digitalSovereignty, we need to have technology like the #fediverse, that does not depend on the Amazon cloud and can be shutdown by Jeff B. or DJT at their will.

In the case of #instantMessaging, this technology exists since 1999 and is called #Jabber or #XMPP.

A very easy to use app to join that network is #Quicksy (Android, iOS). Why not give it try?

Strange to say that as a #Debian developer: I did watch #ToyStory 1, but didn't like it. Naturally, I never watched the sequels.
