There are two ancestral country estates in my family, and I find the contrast between them amusing.
My wife has a lake house in Maine. It's got a dock and boats, a pleasant yard cascading down to the lake with a view of the island where we pick blueberries.
It has nice plumbing, high-speed internet provided by the state of Maine to impoverished lake dwellers and easy access to the touristy spots and lobster rolls, etc.
My family has a log cabin in NY. It has a well, but not a toilet. (It has a composting toilet that we call the poo scrambler, but no-one ever wants to use it.) It's next to an open pit mine, and my parents bought it for $15,000 in the late 80's and it has only depreciated since then.
I can hear the armada of cynical replies now: “just words,” “nothing will happen,” “doesn’t count because,” “what about,” “but other bad thing,” “they’re are all the same,” etc etc.
My good folks, when has fighting for justice ever been easy, or involved a clean victory?
A better world doesn’t come from the nihilism of scoffing at everything that isn’t your hypothetical utopia. It comes from showing up and doing the work, over and over, in this messy world.
This is a tug of war. Keep pulling.
ADDENDUM 1/2: Kagi is apparently now flailing around trying to find a quick and dirty fix for the uproar: “maybe you can disable Brave in your search results or we’ll try to make their services free other something” etc etc.
My deal-killing objection was not actually them using Brave’s services, but rather their •unwillingness to think• about the underlying issues in doing so. I can’t say that this “we’ll let you cover your eyes too” sort of response addresses my concerns at all.
My hot take: software companies should not only have bug bounties but also pay external orgs/consultants for other activities: dev tooling, maintenance, testing, standard compliance, accessibility, etc.
My current working theory is that there is a whole range of software-related work that cannot be done effectively by employees of a company because the internal incentives oppose it. Security is the obvious one but also the above-listed activities are this way too
@redstarfish But do they fix bugs?

My bug reports, of years ago, still have the status "Not yet assigned to anyone".
