The XMPP Software Foundation has published an open letter to Meta, asking them to support true messaging interoperability using the XMPP protocol.

Meta had previously integrated this protocol, and WhatsApp is actually built on XMPP for its message routing system.

We support this initiative as it represents the best approach for genuine interoperability. Federation is the way to go !

@fristi we do not say we wish to federate with them, but Meta is mandated by the European Digital Markets Act to provide interop to users.
Instead of proposing an approach that is currently ineffective, we would rather make sure they use a true open standard and possibly contribute to improve it.

The XSF has a fantastic page dedicated to debunking common XMPP myths. Here are a few examples:

• XMPP is XML, so it must be slow
• XMPP isn’t secure
• XMPP doesn’t protect privacy
• XMPP is too verbose
• XMPP is unreliable
• XMPP isn’t suited for the web

Of course, all of these are misconceptions.
