The XMPP Software Foundation has published an open letter to Meta, asking them to support true messaging interoperability using the XMPP protocol.

Meta had previously integrated this protocol, and WhatsApp is actually built on XMPP for its message routing system.

We support this initiative as it represents the best approach for genuine interoperability. Federation is the way to go !

@fristi we do not say we wish to federate with them, but Meta is mandated by the European Digital Markets Act to provide interop to users.
Instead of proposing an approach that is currently ineffective, we would rather make sure they use a true open standard and possibly contribute to improve it.

@ejabberd why the hell do we want interoperability with a hostile data-mining company :akko_wut: As an xmpp user and server administrator i would likely do everything in my power to block them out.

@fristi @ejabberd Makes sense to block them out if you can but say you *need* to interact with some Meta service (as sadly some people use those services exclusively…): Would you rather do it by proxy through software you control and where the amount of data shared can be limited, or through software that they control?

@fristi @ejabberd Yeah that side of things is a lot harder, it's a bet that the libre software implementations would be at least cared for enough that they can compete with the proprietary ones when people can more easily switch from one to another.
An even bigger bet would be for people to use that two-way street to move from proprietary to libre.

You could worry about standard bodies governance or about them being forked but I think implementations naturally get priority over standards (as seen when there's broad consensus/refusal of implementations compared to the standard), so I'm usually not too worried about that part.

@lanodan @ejabberd that's a good counterpoint. Also as long as the server software can still be freely configured to whitelist or blacklist servers, things will be fine. But it's also the open standard of xmpp itself that I worry about when big corpos start investing in them.
