I run both @prosodyim and @ejabberd. IMHO, both are easy to set up and maintain nowadays.

Just make sure that you use the file store for #Prosody (not an #RDBMS) and #PostgreSQL for #Ejabberd (not Mnesia) 🙂

Both have some minor features, that might be not present in the other, though. E.g. "great invitations", which are ATM only present in Prosody (but WiP for Ejabberd).

Signal has some drawbacks:

1. Only usable for people with Android/iOS devices, even their "desktop" app needs a mobile.

2. You need to register with your phone number.

3. It all runs on Jeff B. AWS. Not everyones cup of tea.

#Drillisch hat leider einseitig mein #SIM gekündigt. Verständlich, denn es war eines ohne #Grundgebühr. Ich habe seit Jahren fast nichts dafür gezahlt, weil ich hauptsächlich #SMS empfangen, aber selten gesendet habe.

Jetzt brauche ich eilig ein neues SIM, mit möglichst niedriger Monatsgebühr. Hauptsächlich um SMS zu empfangen (1..20 pro Monat), optional auch SMS senden. Keine Calls, keine Daten.

Ist für #sms4you #XMPP #gateway 🙂

I use #slidge matridge by @nicoco with #prosody by @prosodyim.

Note, that e2ee does not work with the bridge. No problem for me, because I use it mainly for public rooms or for non-sensitive communication, that could as well be on unencrypted email.

But I like to have all my chats in one client, which is #Gajim by @gajim in my case.

While I mainly use #Jabber, I also have bridges for IRC, Matrix, and SMS.

Maybe at some point #Libervia by @Goffi will work as an #XMPP bridge to Delta 🙂

Fortunately, almost all of my friends and family are on #Jabber, only a few on Matrix and none on Delta, i.e. there is no urgency for me in having a Delta bridge.

I would not worry about the e2ee, though. I'm running the Matrix bridge myself, and I would run an assumed Delta bridge myself. I.e. I would trust the bridge as much as my client.

Some people would argue, that #XMPP is broken, too, esp. the #OMEMO 1 vs. OMEMO 2 situation. But it is probably less broken than Matrix, and definetively better to fix due to its extensible protocol design…

I'm using #slidge by @nicoco to use Matrix from my #Jabber client. Can't say, if it is better than the #ejabberd solution, b/c I never tried the latter. But works for me! But have at least one client with adhoc commands available, e.g. #Gajim or #Profanity!

To me,
#XMPP is the universal communication protocol, used for #IoT, #WebRTC, gaming, social, and #instantMessaging.
#Jabber is the latter in an open and federated network.
#CiscoJabber™ is a product by Cisco.
Zimpy is many things, but don't look it up in #UrbanDictionary!

(Btw. I fiercely advocate naming #freeSoftware projects, children, cats, companies, everything, after #UUIDs. No more unambiguousness, no more #trademark issues.)

I try to avoid the #AI #LLM hell, but now I couldn't resist asking GPT-o4 mini via duck.ai to write my a song about #XMPP, to the tune of #YMCA (1978, #VillagePeople).
I made "young man" age and gender neutral "hey you", and changed "stay at the XMPP" to "chat using XMPP".
It's horrible.

When I try to open a MUC, but the server is down, I get the same dialogue.
Then I press "Esc".
And I can scroll the history! Not very intuitive, but at least I can search the local message archive.
