If you are on Ubuntu, why not just switch to #Debian? Or one of its other downstreams like Mint?

The proposed standard is still in a state of flux:
XEP-0503: Server-side spaces
https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0503.html
As far as I understand, a space is a set of multiple group chats (MUCs) on the same instance, that have the same members and permissions.
Spaces are coming now to #Jabber/#XMPP, which seems to be a fundamental feature of Discord. The leading client for that feature is #Movim by @movim
https://mov.im/post/pubsub.movim.eu/Movim/help-movim-reach-its-goals-for-2026-LQext9
And a Matrix bridge powered by #slidge is already included. Cool!
I'm not sure, if a poll makes much sense, because it depends on preferences. The feature sets are different, the clients are different etc.
My own use cases are much better fulfilled by #Jabber/#XMPP, but others might prefer Delta or Matrix or Briar or Jami…
#JabberDay is a good time for #contemplation.
Let's think about what we like most about #Jabber.
For me most important: #XMPP is truely #universal!
It's for private #chat like Briar or Delta,
it's for group chat like IRC or Matrix,
it's for #IoT like MQTT or AMQP,
it's for #socialNetworks like ActivityPub or Diaspora.
What's important to you?
Why do you assume, that sth. entirely new would do any better than building on existing stuff, such as #XMPP?
NIH never helped much. And you don't need to tell anyone, that you are building on proven technology, e.g. XMPP.
IMHO, the point of both Delta and the new ActivityPub based chat (does it have a name yet?) is prevalence, at least in a certain part of society.
I remember, that Delta proponents said, that "you can reach everyone, who has an email address."
Now it is: "You can reach everyone, who has a fediverse account."
In the end, it is not that easy, e.g. because email users might not have autocrypt in their client, and it will take a while until there is #MLS in e.g. #mastodonEl.
There are already two gateways from #Jabber to ActivityPub, two for SMS, and probably many for email.
@Goffi is working on bridges not breaking e2ee, AFAIK.
ActivityPub: #libervia by @Goffi and #XMPP-ap-bridge by @barbapulpe.
SMS: #cheogram by @cheogram, IIRC, and #sms4you, partially by me.
Email: libervia, again, and cheogram, again. But I believe, that there are more. Not sure.
I have my own instance, only for me, and only for Matrix ("matridge"). It works, i.e. I can participate in public Matrix rooms. Not only messages are bridged, but also images and message reactions.
There is a long-standing bug, that leads to showing Matrix message multiple times in my #Jabber client.
The official #Movim instance makes use of #slidge, for Telegram, Matrix, and Discord. You can try it there, if you trust @movim with your credentials:
#Nitpicking: I would argue, that #Emacs, Nano, and Vim are predominantly TUI (terminual user interface) programs, not so much CLI (command line interface) 🙂 "Real" CLI editors are e.g. ed and sed. But then, Emacs and vim even have optional modern GUI nowadays 🤷
Anyway, I use Emacs in CLI mode, i.e. in a Makefile to create a manual page from #orgmode:
emacs --quick --batch --kill inputfile.org --eval "(require 'ox-man)" -f org-man-export-to-man
I'ld trust Signal, too.
Alas, I can't use it, because the app is only on Google Android and Apple iOS. Even their desktop client requires such a thingy.
Also, I like to get rid of #EvilTech dependencies, which includes AWS 🤷
Oh, and they still want my phone number. That's not necessarily a blocker for me, but … why?
Btw. https://proton.me/blog/is-signal-safe says Threema were #openSource, but AFAIK the server is not.

And an QR code.
Unfortunately, not a joke.

With gateways to IRC (#biboumi), Matrix (#slidge-matridge), and SMS (#sms4you).
There is a brandnew #MobileLinux and #Mobian channel (mostly en, partially de) on #Jabber:
xmpp:mobile-linux@conference.conversations.im?join
𝕬𝖇𝖆𝖓𝖉𝖔𝖓 𝕬𝖓𝖉𝖗𝖔𝖎𝖉, 𝖞𝖊 𝖜𝖍𝖔 𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖊𝖗 𝖍𝖊𝖗𝖊!
#Jabber is the #fediverse of #chat.
