The thing that makes the most sense is that Charlie was pushing against his masters to much and so he was silenced. Erika was part n parcel of it as evidenced by her actions after the fact. I have heard things that sound like the crack of a gunshot, to the T and later find out it was just a innocuous sound. The echo, the angle at which it reached my ears, whatever, made it sound like a crack.
