    RE: https://mastodon.social/@MastodonEngineering/116103936616513460

We are looking at growing the Mastodon team with two new backend developers. We are starting some ambitious projects and need help!

You need to have a significant experience with Ruby on Rails as this is our framework of choice, but we are also looking for experience in search algorithms, protocol specifications, Rust or Go and project management (this one to assist me in tracking everything we are working on).

If you are interested, please apply using the form provided in the job description.

@dansup wait… you said that you would implement it in a way that is compatible with our Collections, but you are trying to do your own thing?
Our featured collections FEP contains specification for consent-based Starter Packs already, did you read it?

As the end of year approaches, we spent some time to rework the Wrapstodon feature that we first tried last year.

It now collects your yearly data on-demand, does not require admins to enable anything (so it will be available to everyone in December 2026) and you get a nice shareable URL with your yearly summary!

Admins on nightly releases can enable it using the "wrapstodon" feature flag. It has been enabled on mastodon.online and mastodon.social

@tchambers I am not sure I follow what you are trying to do here.
Our idea is much simpler: when you post a Note that include URLs, the authoring server (ie, the one creating the note) will try to determine if those URLs point to AP objects. If that's the case, it will tag them, either using Object Links (FEP-e232, but we have some concerns about it) or another mecanism. The receiving server will then know this URL points to an AP object, and can have it opened in-app.

@tchambers it’s one of those things that seem simple, but are in fact not (otherwise it would already have been solved).
We keep track of multiple of those and regularly come up with new ways of possibly solving those, until we figure out something that we believe can be implemented. This is also limited by the still small size of the team (2 backed devs) but we hope to be able to continue to grow the team

@jaz ActivityPub does not have the concept of a "server" or "peer”. Knowing that there is some AP inboxes on a server is a signal that a link *might* be an AP object, but you still need to fetch it and check. We do not think it's a good idea that every server does this for every link, hence our current thinking of having this done by the authoring server.

@strypey we are considering something to solve this, but are rather considering that the authoring server would add information to the Note saying that a link point to an ActivityPub object.

@GossiTheDog you should start seeing referrers from mastodon.social again starting today. This will be back ported in the next 4.5 patch release (in the next 2 weeks)

@GossiTheDog Ok my bad, it looks like we have a regression from a recent refactor where we add `rel=noreferrer` to links in posts.

It will be fixed in the next version. Thanks for reporting!

@GossiTheDog I can correctly see the “Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin" header on cyberplace.social, so it seems to be working correctly.

Did Google Safe Browsing just classified all github.com URLs as unsafe? This seems… wrong? Is it a consequence of SHA1-Hulud?

Three years ago, I decided to quit Twitter and install a Mastodon server to see if it can replace it for me. It worked better than expected and I discoered so many new amazing people along the way.

I would also never have imagined that I could end up recruiting and leading the team building it!

What an adventure, and we are only getting started ✨

I am so happy with this release, it includes a lot of things we have wanted for a long time, and we managed to release it only 4 months after 4.4.

I am glad to be working alongside such an incredible team and it feels so good to finally have enough people to make real progress. Thanks you all ❤️

    Now, onwards to 4.6!

We’re excited to release Mastodon 4.5 into the world! Arriving just a few months after the last release, this version brings the long-awaited Quote Posts feature, along with many other goodies. Here’s a quick look (you should read our blog post for more!) https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/11/mastodon-4.5

@mastodonmigration You are mistaken it, this is not about quote posts. Starting with Mastodon 4.5, when you view a post (after clicking on it), Mastodon will try to fetch replies from this threads from other servers, as your server might not know about them. It will then tell you if it found more replies, and ask if you want to refresh the screen to view them. We hope this will solve the "missing replies" problem.

@aslakr You can start your reply, then go to the post you want to quote, and press the boost button then quote. Same for edits.

We will make this easier in a future version by allowing you to paste a link, detect it’s a quotable post, and offer to transform it into a quote (but this is technically complex, so we will launch without it for now)
