Claire, the GlitchSOC maintainer, is part of the Mastodon team, and she herself says that we should not re-use what Glitch does because it has issues.

@jwildeboer This is on the roadmap, but it requires a complete replacement of the status parser, which is a complex endeavour with security & performance impacts. @dave started experimenting on the topic but we did not find a good way yet.

@CorentinLamy Mediapart a carrément lancé leur instance, pour fournir des comptes "officiels” aux différentes rubriques et aux journalistes.
La commission européenne a aussi son instance, et leur équipe social média traite Mastodon spécifiquement, en adaptant leurs posts et en répondant aux gens. C'est leur réseau préféré en terme d'intéractions (source: j'ai discuté avec eux la semaine dernière).

@borisschapira il est déjà possible d’embed un post sur un site, c’est dans le menu avec les 3 points. Il faut un petit JS pour que ça marche bien, pas trop le choix

Today is my 2 year Mastodon anniversary! After decided to stop using Twitter I created my instance, invited a few friends and started discovering the Fediverse.

Then I tried to help where I saw that my skills could be needed and got hired to rework the project & mastodon.social infrastructures, then moved to a wider engineering role and here I am, 2 years later, working tirelessly to ensure that our beloved software and network thrive.

@troed @GossiTheDog @Gargron @zuck @pcottle on this specific case, they confirmed this was a (boring) legal reason, and will be removed once federatikg edits is done, the t are crossed and the i are dotted on some paperwork

@GossiTheDog It helps with some actors, but it is not an issue with many others, including the ones that use captcha-busting software (there are now even “dark" SAAS for this), or for human-generated spam using content farms (we see a lot of those in some countries like Nigeria and Vietnam)

Another consideration: new installations should not allow open registrations by default. This should be a setting that the administrator needs to opt into, and this is a good place to inform them that open registration instances require moderation resources.

In Mastodon, we display a warning when the admin chooses this option. Mastodon also support requiring moderator/admin approval for new sign ups, which helps a lot in preventing automated registrations.

@thisismissem It has been merged and quickly backported into a 4.2 patch version

I would encourage every Fediverse software project to implement a “dead-man switch" on registrations: if nobody with moderator permissions has been active in the last week, then disable new account creation.

The Fediverse has a significant number of abandoned instances that are used by bad actors to create accounts and send spam.

We implemented this in Mastodon (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/29318) and it has been highly effective.

@aral @goetz Mastodon supports the SWF foundation. They call us partners because of this support at launch I guess. I have no idea what relationship they have with Meta. And there is no relationship between Mastodon and Meta.
Similarly, Meta is a W3C member, Mastodon participates to some W3C meetings about ActivityPub.

@aral @TomWellborn Mastodon did not partner with anyone. We support the SWF because we feel this is really needed for the Fediverse to move forward. Meta might think the same, but there is no such partnership (or any other kind of relationship)

@goetz @aral @TomWellborn Yes, we are a partner / member / supporter / … of the SocialWebFoundation, as I said above, because we think such an organisation is needed for the Fediverse to grow. We are not involved in the Foundation creation, or it's management, neither we have partnered with Meta about anything.

After updating the Mastodon iOS app to build with XCode 16, we are noticing some very weird data corruption, but only in Release configuration. We suspect this is some data corruption in one of our dependencies caused by some compiler optimisation, but so far we have not really found out the cause.
iOS dev friends, does this ring a bell?

@erincandescent if this brings money and financial stability to contributors and implementors then I am all for it. But so far I have not seen this happening. For example there are no companies working on Mastodon or sending significant resources towards it, except the Mastodon where we try to hire people full-time.
