@dansup seems like there's still a good case for an open source, decentralized TikTok alternative that can evolve to address the problems with TikTok's dark patterns even if the likes of Youtube or Instagram are trying to be like TT too.
@Mastodon not a big fan of some of the language here. Atmosphere being labeled as "large-scale" or "planet-scale" like its proponents like to do is just pointless.
Bluesky is currently not significantly larger compared to the fediverse and it is shrinking... There's nothing particularly "large" about it. The platforms listed in this under Atmosphere are tiny compared to the fediverse since they want to avoid mentioning the only one with any adoption worth talking about in this context...
@dansup one thing to contemplate is that ATproto is fundamentally designed to favor those with lots of resources because you cannot be fully independent without hosting some very expensive components. Supporting a protocol like that could have negative consequences down the line.
@DBG3D@EUCommission people do like to come to these comment threads with their complaints about everything even unrelated to the post. I guess that's understandable and you see it everywhere.
I wouldn't say it's quite as bad as being negative 90% of the time though.
@MastodonEngineering Lots of focus on redesign and new features but I wish you'd focus more on basic shortcomings that have been around for a long time.
For example there's been a PR open for more than a year that addresses a major shortcoming of federation: backfilling posts to empty profiles of users. No real explanation for why it can't be merged in experimental form...
@dansup I hope you could find the time to take a look at the issues with followed hashtags no longer appearing in a user's timeline for some reason and having to be refollowed.
@dansup well I think there should be a happy middle ground but I agree search indexing should not be controversial especially when it even respects the user's privacy settings...
@dansup Indeed. I think you have to be mindful of the culture of different types of apps. If I browse just images on Mastodon I'm going to get a lot of screenshots, graphs and other stuff that nobody going to a photo sharing app is really interested in seeing. Same thing happens with videos.
The key is to let the different apps have their own body of content and use federation to supplement that with the accounts that specifically want to take part in that kind of community from Mastodon etc.
@dansup My understandig is that Skylight is showing just Bluesky posts which means most of them come from regular Bluesky accounts. There may not be that many bridged Bluesky accounts posting videos overall so maybe it doesn't matter but if there are, flooding Loops with the political video clips and onlyfans teases that seems to make up 90% of Bluesky videos probably would not be that great for the Loops timeline tbh.
@dansup yeah judging by what ppl are saying Skylight definitely seems to be having some issues shipping something where the basic functions work properly and that has remained unchanged for like 6 months now...
