    @BowsacNoodle @Marakus @Racist_Columbo Would be a huge ass balloon to carry a spacecraft though, which is why I am suggesting something with a bit more oomph to it, not necessarily propeller aircraft. Could be awesome if it worked though.

    I'm also under the impression that the first handful(s) of kilometers of altitude and thousands of meters per second of speed are by far the toughest ones for the spacecraft to work through because of thicker atmosphere and lack of intertia when having to start from zero. Wouldn't it be a significant boon for the spacecraft to effectively have bypassed that? Or is it actually not that relevant?

    @BowsacNoodle @Marakus @Racist_Columbo Most rocket launches are equipment and sattelites, not passengers. This makes the limits of the well-being of living passengers less relevant, although the cargo of the rocket should of course still be in good condition, so the issue is not completely removed.

    Different possibility to assist rocket launches to reduce their fuel-load requirement:
    Very large "mothership" aircraft that flies to the most extreme altitudes possible with conventional aircraft engines, from which the spacecraft detaches and engages its own rocket engines to the last step of the way?

    @Marakus @Racist_Columbo Maybe you are misunderstanding what I am saying; I am not suggesting that the catapult replaces all the launch fuel, just that it compliments it, reducing the amount of required fuel.
    Then, you could argue, that we are back to the original problem instead of "just add more fuel" it becomes "just add more length to the launch catapult", but I would argue that is sufficiently different of a problem to not be the same issue.

    @Marakus @Racist_Columbo What I don't understand is how the catapult supposedly doesn't help.

    A spacecraft starting to climb solely on the power of its own engines at a height of, for example, 350m and a speed of 2000km/h will surely have a large advantage over one starting at 0m height and a speed of 0km/h, in terms of how much energy is needed to reach the desired speed and distance.
