@mekkaokereke Lol the main issue I can see with them is you can add people to them without their permission. That seems like a potential vector for abuse. I can see why people like using and creating them, and some people love being included in them.

@rysiek The continual attempts to pass off sociopathy and clinical narcissism as autism are an intensely annoying form of excuse making for terrible men. They do this with school shooters. It's similar to how rich White boys and athletes who are rapists get excused made for them. Plenty of people are on the spectrum without being clinical narcissists or sociopaths (which is also why promoting this idea is also harmful to people on the spectrum, as is the "autistic people are superior" belief....different isn't better or worse, it's just different!) @mekkaokereke

@jonny Skibidi is a nonsense word from Russian techno outfit Little Big's song of the same name. It was made up by people not an LLM. Little Big was huge in Russia but left Russia when Putin launched its invasion of Ukraine. The Skibidi toilets thing is a very bad imitation of Little Bigs absurdist Russian aesthetic and may well be a form of war propaganda (one of Russia's more influential propagandists was an artist, crude absurdity is a tactic). Little Big were massive in Russia and the song Skibidi got a fair amount of attention in some circles in the West (their videos are really fun and they really established a certain absurdist aesthetic). Anyway, main point is it's nonsense slang made up by human artists who are famous for an absurd and surrealist aesthetic and not an invention of an LLM. This ends our Ted Talk on the etymology of Skibidi and why it's not indicative of LLMs creating a new language. It's all human inventiveness and about how words sound in a musical context, it's jazz scatting and very human creativity.

@jonny Not to harsh your buzz but what you're describing sounds like how slang has functioned and travelled through culture for at least the last 100 years (in a Modern context, slang and in-group patois and slang obviously go back further). See also Lavender Languages, Black American slang, teenagers since we created the category of teenager, etc. Often these innovations in language reach the mainstream (aka dominant and dominating culture) through music, just as other aesthetic innovations usually first reach the mainstream via visual art, fashion and music.

@jonny Also, Georgian guy behind Skibidi toilets is more like a 4Chan kind of dude but just with cheap videos that are racist and pro-Russian war on Ukraine. It's more pro-Russia White supremacist meme-ing. The point of this kind of shit is to seduce boys with absurd/funny stuff while also promoting racism (and Russia).
Also, right wingers seem to understand the power of language to shape and manipulate our consensus reality a lot better than Liberals and even a lot of contemporary leftists seem to do. Language can be weaponized. It shapes how we think and feel. Words really do matter, as Orwell tried to make clear.

@Wraithe Yeah, just as a counterpoint, women are exposed constantly to male hate on both personal and systemic levels. Women are allowed a bit of trauma response when men routinely rape and murder us. Maybe not you personally but you still end up benefiting from our oppression. It's like being perceived as White in our society, we benefit from the oppression of non-White people wether we intend to or not. Or living in the West, we benefit from the exploitation of Africa and the global south even if it's not intentional on our part.

Starting to think about what my communication plans with my family in Australia and my friends in Montreal are if the internet goes down because so much of my communication relies upon internet based services. Between age, lack of money, a lot of my friends being busy parents or hesitantly social, and Covid my casual social contacts in the physical have greatly diminished over the past few years. I need to invest more effort into this, I used to be a highly networked and social person. Maybe I need to start hosting a weekly dinner or something...

@tas50 @tob How we reach kids whose parents are bigots or who don't care to pay attention is a different issue. Some of those kids simply educate themselves once they get out into the world and meet a more diverse range of people. White supremacists hate multiculturalism because it erodes White supremacy. Sexists hate feminism because it erodes sexism. In some ways it really is that simple. @mekkaokereke @wendinoakland

@tas50 I'm not saying social media doesn't push it on kids, it's about how we innoculate kids so they recognize bigoty when exposed to it and don't get sucked in. If you have female and non-White friends as a man and model healthy masculinity then you're actively modeling embracing equality, being antiracist and being feminist.
And I don't have kids, though I talk to kids I love about these things, so I'm not here to lecture you. Obviously you're an engaged parent and you've countered what they're mimicking that they see online. Deconstructing and explaining why those dog whistles are racist/sexist/homophobic is part of educating your kid if they haven't already learned that and it's also teaching them to think critically and to be anti-racist and feminist. Feminism is also for boys because it's essentially just humanism at its core. @tob @mekkaokereke @wendinoakland
