I suspect what we need is not to try to stop Meta, but to encourage Google and any other big players.
The attraction of the Fediverse is portability, the more big players we have, the more competition.

There are big players in the phone system, but also plenty of smaller players riding on the big guys intrastructure.

The EU has been effective in this instance.

We could learn a lot from this analogy.

Hmm, back when I was working with paper tape, I lusted after 8" floppies.
That doesn't sound quite right...

No, the tape tore. A lot.
And patching code was sometimes exactly that. Putting a new piece over and punching new holes. That was quicker than punching out a hundred metres of tape.

There are a couple of mitigations for this...

A magic word of 45:£5-+ffguj (non dictionary)

A OTP magic word with an expiry. (Has some DDOS attack surfaces)

Etc. Etc.

I'm sure we should be talking to @jpmens for creative ways to use DNS for validation...
