   There is a strong rumour going round that some Fediverse developers and admins have held secret discussions with Meta/Facebook under NDAs.

   The Fediverse is supposed to be an alliance of open projects built by a broad grassroots base. Its developers are not supposed to hold secret backroom discussions with people who have a horrific track record (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence).

   Facebook/Meta is in effect a sociopathic corporation (https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/growth-at-any-cost-top-facebook-executive-defended-data). Nothing good will come of talking to them.

     @feditips There is nothing wrong with non-public talks. The way the fediverse is setup even hostile actions make the creation of a new mainline federation possible. But I really do not see that happening.

     The Fediverse is supposed to be an open place with transparency about its development and funding.

     NDAs are the opposite of transparent, they legally tie the hands of people who sign them and in this case it's purely for the benefit of Meta/Facebook.

     The devs and admins didn't do this on their own, they are supported by a massive amount of good will, donations and voluntary work.

     (It's like Reddit recently claiming it created all the data on Reddit: no it didn't, it was all the users and volunteers who did that.)

     @feditips fediverse developers need to pay or their shoes too. Devs are under no obligation to share your personal values. I bet Meta pays more than Buy Me a Cofeee does.

     Open source is a good thing, but it's not enough by itself.

     Reddit was open source until 2017, then they decided to go proprietary:

     You need things to be FOSS and federated and spread out on lots of instances in order to be relatively safe.

     I'm not talking about someone taking jobs somewhere.

     I'm only talking about their role as being in charge of a public good that was built with volunteer labour and donations.

     It is immoral to treat something built with volunteer labour as your asset.
