His only big successful products after Facebook have been acquisitions (Instagram, WhatsApp), while home-brewed stuff has fallen far behind the competition (Messenger), fizzled after a strong start (Threads), or bombed completely (Metaverse). He's basically just profit-taking on those three successes these days.

Here's the thing: many dates aren't point-in-time but past/future. We should have seen the left half of a massive bell curve of failures for 10–20 years before the year 2000 (and before we started fixing it seriously), e.g. mortgages being flagged as 80 years late for renewal, reactors shutting down because their maintenance was 95 years late, etc.

We didn't see that. The Y2K bug wasn't fake, but it was massively overhyped.

@evan There are parallels, but this isn't a religious or sectarian conflict; it's about history, colonialism, and mass displacement (including millions of Palestinians forced from their homes, and several generations growing up in refugee camps).

I don't know what a peace will look like, but since the West started the problem with the post-WWI colonial mandates, I wouldn't trust us to end it. The solution will have to come from Palestinians and Israelis themselves.

1. The book plays fast and loose with the technical details.

Every instance, no matter how large, has a responsibility to try to make itself safer for people who are often the targets of hate and abuse. If Bluesky failed at that, it's all on them — no excuses.

@arstechnica If that's true, it's horrible. As a former aircraft owner, I know that there are a small number of them who use hardware-store fasteners in critical locations instead of the spec ones, and that they sometimes result in fatalities. But I can't imagine even the most-reckless of them installing a game controller as a primary system.
