Real talk, I think I have a stronger claim to lain-ness than a lot that identify with lain. Given that the first time I was compared to lain was by someone else, and that I'd never seen Serial Experiments Lain (Still haven't but I'd like to sometime). I'm sure some can one-up me pretty handily but it was never my goal to imitate lain. :\
And since halfway through cleaning up my apartment for a friend to come over (the one who said I was "like lain" btw) the place looks like this. Look at that lack of cable management, that lack of organization. See how there are no free surfaces to work on so I've been doing soldering and oscilloscope probing on the floor. I don't have space but I keep getting computers anyway. See the reflection of my mental health coping strategies in physical space.

1. A typically rather dimly lit apartment that I've turned lights on in to take a photo. Tables stacked on each other overflowing with cales and computer parts in the foreground, stuff strewn on the floor. 5-high Stacks of cardboard boxes overflowing with cables. A disassembled laptop battery. an oscilloscope on the floor. an office chair with some foam strapped to the back of it to fix its broken back support. the sliding door leading outside is totally blocked by bins and computer parts. Rat's nests of cables everywhere. CD spindles. Every possible surface that isn't the floor is absolutely full. There are six desktop computers I am controlling from my desk, via three monitors. A fourth monitor is on the ground next to the desk. A fifth monitor for 240p video sources is almost out of frame, but usable for things like my Amiga (not pictured). Five of the computers on my desk are stacked on the top of the desk itself, and are 1990's beige machines. The sixth is a modern-ish desktop on the floor that serves as an audio mixer and control hub and file server for the other five.

fun thing: you can rip cd's with cdrdao (or readcd if you have Opinions, like I sometimes do) without unmounting them first if you provide the device as a SCSI LUN (logical unit number, e.g., `2,0,0`), but not if you feed it the drive as a device node (`/dev/sr0`).

Who knows what havoc this might or might not wreak on the ripping process if you're browsing it while raw ripping, but there you have it.

The difference between the red spine and blue spine versions is simple; red spine says "Uses your existing DOS and Windows" and the blue spine says "includes DOS and Windows application support." Blue box is also a bit thicker. Red spine was of course cheaper.
