Okay… here goes… been holding off on doing this for ages. I was about 16 when I got these, and I'm nearly 30 now and summoning the willpower to cut the film (I know i'm never fucking selling these and don't give a fuck about resale value but it's still hard after so long)
fuck, shit, i looked up what the sealed boxes go for on ebay. should not have done that. AAAAGH i'm gonna open it anyway. These cost me $2 and I'm never fucking buying another copy but it's cool to have these so AAAA

“The totally cool way to run and network your computer” sounds just as stupid as it did when I first got these boxes. I paid $2 for them at a HAM radio convention 11 years ago and they’ve just been sitting sealed ever since. Got them out of storage today and I think I’ll open them. (Thread time.)

Edit so I can find this thread later: OS/2 IBM #OS2 #IBM #OS2Warp

First, the stickers on the wrapping for the red spine box. The biue spine box doesn't seem to have stickers on the wrapping.

Back of the red spine box is identical to the blue spine box as far as I can see. Except the colour of the word "Warp" in the logo.
Fuck, this is a lot of alt text to transcribe. But here it goes.

@hellomiakoda yes, it worked when it aired in 2000 or whenever. It doesn't work now because kids _in 2025_ are distant enough from that period that they don't know what it's referring to

Reminder that I have a largely roughly translated the Japanese EDGE image editor (Enhanced Dot Graphics Editor) for windows 9x into English. It's a very nice pixel art drawing program, although it appears to lack one or two featues I'd like (showing an unmagnified version of the art while also showing the magnified section I'm working on). The features it does have (especially shading related) more than make up for these absences.
Note that the translation is very, very rough and awkward sometimes. Even for stuff that I know what it does now, I'd have to go back in to change the wording, and I haven't had the energy to do that yet. Some of the text is burned into the code section of the program, so space is limited; for the stuff in windows resource files it's much easier. I think you'll still find you can figure your way around most of it.

Some programming languages I’ve tried and liked and would recommend to others:

    • C (especially C89/C90/“ANSI C” and C99)
    • posix shell, bourne shell, and similar shells (bash, ksh93, mksh)
    • PHP
    • Scheme (depending on the vibes I’m getting from someone I might recommend)
    • Common Lisp (Same caveat as Scheme)
    • Emacs Lisp (Same caveat as Scheme and Common Lisp)
    • Motorola 68000 assembly

Some languages I’ve tried and liked but would not recommend to others:

    • Hewlett-Packard RPL (Actually I might recommend it to someone but it has to be a very specific kind of person)
    • FORTH (same as RPL)
    • Commodore BASIC (Microsoft BASIC) for the VIC-20
    • 6502 assembly (so bad it’s good)
    • Z80 assembly

Some languages I’ve tried, did not like, and would not recommend to others:

    • COBOL (maybe I could get used to it? I can at least read it. Just it’s so painfully like writing SQL statements without being as generally useful as SQL database queries)
    • Kotlin (Like that feeling when you read words that alone you understand, but together in a sentence they make zero sense)
    • Java
    • Clojure (a.k.a. “Let’s make Common Lisp but make it worse”)
    • Rust (stands for “Ridiculous Use of System Time” or something as far as I am concerned, heavy on memory and storage and super slow to compile and reads like Kotlin)
    • TI BASIC (TI-82/83/84 style; TI-89 is a little bit better but still not good)
    • C++ (unless you’re just writing almost completely C and building it with a C++ compiler)
    • x86 assembly (I kind of like it but mostly don’t, there are better and more coherent CISC processor ISA’s if you’re into that)

I should put Javascript somewhere, so I’ll say that it’s possible to write javascript code that I like and can read. Just no one chooses to do it anymore. There was a window between the time JQuery started to fade and all these stupid fucking “web frameworks” took off that it was somewhat tolerable.

PC arrived. Not gonna mess with this any more until after work now that I've verified it is insect-free. But I got the Dell 486DX/33, popped it open, stuck a sound card in the slot that didn't have a cover on it, and looked around inside a little bit. It's got what I expect will be a western digital IDE drive (one of the ones with a black case) hidden under the power supply, but it's not immediately apparent how to get to it. Whenever I do a full disassembly I'll find out I suppose.
Not power tested it yet either, but the seller did.
The Sound Blaster 16 wasn't inside it, I just am considering popping it in since it's more "period correct" even though the ESS card I'm using is a pre-ESFM model (ES688 chip), and uses a YMF262 clone for sound blaster pro compatibility. The ESS card is from 1996, the SB16 card is from 1993 based on chip datecodes.
It uses a CR2325 to be mildly annoying, but much less annoying than one of the leaky varta batteries or whatever.

I put it all back together, adding in an ESS AudioDrive card (as an enhanced sound blaster pro clone) and an Adaptec SCSI controller (so I can use an external CD-ROM drive with it). I might put in a sound blaster 16 instead (I have one), but it sounds like garbage so I'm trying the ESS card first. I also cleaned up the case some. Still haven't tried powering it up; will likely do that tomorrow (actually today, in around 6-10 hours, after I wake up).
There are some little plastic bits broken inside, and i'm attempting to glue the cracks in the power and reset switch caps to see if that helps even though it never seems to. I really need to find some ABS plastic I don't care about to use as donor plastic for these switches.
(The switch caps are not installed in this photo on account of me waiting for the glue to cure)
Edit: if you have a mitsumi 5.25 inch floppy drive eject lever, or a whole drive you're willing to send me in any condition (as long as it has the lever) please let me know.

This is a placeholder bio for the moment but i'm @wyatt8740@tech.lgbt . It's probably a good idea to follow me here if you follow me there.I'm migrating from tech.lgbt I think. I am getting annoyed with the infighting between instances I want to follow people on.I'm some kind of non-binary trans-feminine, but I'm not too worried about the specifics of my identity. I am me… whatever that means to you. :pI like old thing.<3 C, Unix, shell scripting, old electronics, emacs, & old cute cars. Nearly 30.(Seeking a job!)Current obsessions include Bubblegum Crisis & the NEC PC-9801.I draw pixel art of varying quality.I want to be genuine and connect with others empathetically, bidirectionally; we need more of that and to assume good faith more easily. I still am strongly opinionated though, so I'm sorry if I don't always live up to my own expectations.Vetting follows, it's just a vibe check.LMK if I should CW something or act differently, I want to
