@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @a1ba@suya.place The GNU book is actually a language introduction, providing well explained examples and tutorials. It's not just a specification. It's actually good classroom material.

@a1ba @allison @affine Yeah, I have -DDEBUG -UNDEBUG in my cflags to avoid that nonsense.
Also no asserts when it could be regular error handling instead.

@wyatt @a1ba @allison Also part of how I got that one is because I went like "whatever, let's try, they're the ones who will know if I could be a good fit or not and interview will help knowing more, screw impostor syndrome / avoiding rejection" so if you see one of those, give it a shot anyway. -

@allison @lanodan @a1ba Forgetting to allocate space for the NULL terminator is not a guaranteed segfault - due to padding it is extremely likely for there to be at least an unused byte after an array.
But such mistake is a hidden flaw that likes to reveal itself when compiled on another machine, where there happens to be no padding after the array. -

@allison @Suiseiseki @a1ba And funnily it's not just padding, it'll either segfault or corrupt whatever is at that the address where NULL got written, and that can just be a *lot* of things (buffer, mere variable, pointer, malloc internal data, …). -

@lanodan @allison @a1ba Yes, as I pointed out, it is possible for there to be no padding.
As below does not segfault on my machine and works fine when compiled with `gcc main.c`;
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
int main()
{
char sneed[] = "Sneed's feed and seed.";
char feed[sizeof(sneed)-1];
memcpy(feed,sneed,sizeof(sneed));
printf("%s\n", feed);
return 0;
}
Of course if you enable any optimizations with gcc hardened 14, you'll get; *** buffer overflow detected ***: terminated
