@feld@keithzg ActiveState sort of de-emphasized some non-paid stuff a few years back. ActivePerl and ActiveTcl among them. I hear the paid versions are still good, but the zero-price stuff is tough to get working.
Rich neighborhood. In #SoCal's #SGV, they sprayed malathion-laced bait. I remember walking home from the mall after work as helicopters sprayed from overhead.
@Crell a little bit of both, but mostly genuine. i keep seeing frameworks like laravel pop up in web development and we use it at work in some of our microservices so i'm interested in knowing why it's attractive as a language/how performant it is compared to something like rails

@evan That's really sad. I think people need to have some tolerance for ambiguity in these polls. I don't want to read through a paragraph explaining whether 'chocolate chip' and 'cookies and cream' flavors are considered chocolate or vanilla in order to answer a poll.

The problem with this is that you may have new needs that no software company anticipated, but if you have a little programming skill (and even using VBA in an office program qualifies), you may be able to bend what they produced to make it meet your needs better.
Until a few years back, employees of $EMPLOYER often wrote their own Excel macros and Access database applications to make their jobs easier. It wasn't us tech peeps that wrote or maintained their custom programs. It was the employees themselves.
People *should* have that kind of ability ... and the software they use should grant it to them. It isn't that they have to use it, but it should be available if they want to use it. And we shouldn't make it seem so esoteric that they don't believe they can learn.
