It won't. While I'm genuinely happy for you if you've found an affinity group, prepared, and can ride out nazi germany level fascism with your chosen family off the grid - many can't

organizing won't become easier under total fascism. There's this idea (and I myself fell into it for a short while) that if things just get pared down to The Anarchists/The Communists/Both Of Us Together vs the nazis that all contradictions will vanish, no one will be apathetic/risk-averse when every moment is a fight for survival

if anything fighting for survival to the point we already are -induces- freeze and flop as trauma responses. Which can, yes, present as *apathy*

And I'll also make one more note: NO ONE (well almost no one) is truly Off The Grid or in complete perfect privacy etc. Often, even with every precaution taken etc - all of us are often not being persecuted simply because empire doesn't give a shit about minnows when it can glorify itself/entrench itself with whales and sharks and swordfish so to speak

What is a food/drink you like but that has an (undeserved in your opinion) bad reputation?

Just thought of this heating up some leftover pizza for lunch and picking the sausage off (which often triggers some unpleasant gastro issues for me and which I don't really like) - I much prefer anchovies to sausage, but... rarely *anyone else* does...

(Also, its colonialist and appropriative origins due to how pineapple came to be aside - if you're open to eating pineapple and fish, try anchovy and pineapple pizza at some point. I'd say that's my favorite *ever,* being the perfect mix of sweet and salty and carb and starch etc

That said, even ordering it is sometimes difficult because a lot of places think that's someone trolling/ordering something intentionally bad and then not many people want to try it)

@BeAware Ugh, personally I wouldn't do that for my own ethical reasons (e.g. I am aware of the concerns raised and try to respect them as much as possible - I don't think it's a good idea to take a flippant attitude toward people with legitimate concerns, if that makes sense?)

But I can understand how you might feel that way being through the experiences you have, if that makes sense.

@BeAware I kind of get this on the level of being afraid to create/share art because even IF it's not AI, most of the time I make digital art it's hard to describe/do alt text for (being inherently visual and abstract/psychedelic "bring your own interpretation") + I have a nuanced take regarding AI (e.g. fine with it as long as it's not sexual imagery or passed off as non-AI art) so people might accuse me of using it anyway

I will say the attitude of defining True Art can get really frustrating

Going to try to explain why I doompost and seem so cynical so much of the time re us politics:

I actually *have* severe depression and at the same time, I'm aware of the harms done by trump regime 1 or even a conservative liberal/center-right government like the current biden administration - and I'm *absolutely terrified* of what a hyper-fascist trump regime 2 will be for everyone if it happens

this is why I'm so "doom and gloom and expect the worst and plan for it" 1/2

often are people who've never experienced that for real, or who were favored and got the warm embrace of community rather than the boot to lick or get kicked

@liztai @toolsontech Yeah, while not speaking from a "cancellation," this is one thing that makes me *very* nervous about ideologies/concepts that are heavily dependent on the "affinity group" or "everyone must fit in."

Someone *won't,* often, for good reasons (they're a whistleblower on abuse/corruption/wrongdoing), for neutral reasons (some people just do NOT like each other and can't be forced to override that) just as easily as bad ones, and groups can stretch to make one of those a bad one

@liztai @toolsontech and if anyone has never seen or experienced that a) that's good and b) I feel bad for them if they ever do, because if it hits you out of nowhere it's terrifying to realize "I'd either acquiesce or lose everything" and that social pressure is *valid* and leads to harm as well as harmony

But yeah it's like, I kind of find that "ideally there's only collectives and affinity groups, and fit in with your friends or else" ideal a bit problematic as a result

@skye Will also add this depressing point: if you are in the US and have to call 911 (don't, unless they are unconscious or injured to a degree they need immediate life support) *emphasize* that they are unconscious and/or immobile, and that it is a medical emergency.

If you just call 911, are "someone's flailing all around" there's a good (bad) chance the first responder will be an armed (and barely medically trained if medically trained at all) cop

I just ran into a Holocaust denial post, a Holocaust minimization post, and a general "Jews own the US" conspiracy post, from three different *leftists.*

Stop it. the nation of Israel being genocidal isn't an excuse to spew bigotry

UNLIKE with nazi Germany or putinist Russia, conflating the Israeli state with the people it claims to represent (and doesn't!) *can* lead to places even *worse* than "just" ignoring resistance from within and internally oppressed people.

There isn't a systematic hatred of people of "German" or "Russian" heritage that has threaded non-German/non-Russian cultures for centuries.

And as leftists, we need to be aware of that, while still criticizing Israel's genocide.

It's like, people at protests aren't being antisemitic as a whole. That's an insulting canard put forward by cops as an excuse for repression. And nor are people on here, for the most part.

That said, when someone *is,* it damages the credibility of the entire cause, perpetuates one of the world's oldest hate narratives, throws the door wide open to entryists... it's not cool or edgy or funny, nor is it helping the cause of ending the war and the genocide.

@tillshadeisgone Even as a white person, "what server do I join" is... a mess. Even if one comes well-recommended, it can be a bad fit for any given individual.

It's definitely a racism problem, AND it's also a problem of fragmentation over centralization, and what centralization does exist being centralized around large instances

@tillshadeisgone I think it would be much better for everyone if the very structure of mastodon/the fedi was changed to *not require home instances.*

As in, yes, home instances can be wonderful for many reasons, but a truly frictionless joining process *would not require* a home instance at all
